I don't think the fact that Calzaghe out boxed Hopkins from about round 3 on means that Hopkins isn't great. It just shows how great Calzaghe is, which many refuse to acknowledge. Hopkins would have had no chance in a rematch. Joe had him figured him out. For almost every other fighter Hopkins faced, he was the one who figured out the other fighter. That was not the case with Calzaghe. Hopkins gives Hagler and Monzon each a good fight. That should be praise enough. He's a top 5 middleweight in my view.
To me the equation is quite simple. It goes like this. I've watched Martinez versus a half drunk, hung over, and weight drained Pavlik 7 or 8 times. That sorry ass version of Pavlik won 5 rounds, and scored a knock down. (There is absolutely no justification for giving Martinez the 4th round, and there is no justification for discrediting the knock down.) Now, if the worst version of Pavlik we've ever seen won 5 rounds, how many rounds would a prime Hopkins win?
the same bhop who defended his middleweight title against a slew of former junior middleweights and quite a few former welterweights......as well as fighting robert ****ing allen 3 dreadful times....bhop somehow never tangled with benn, eubank, mcclellan, toney, mccallum, collins, reggie johnson, michael nunn..... yeah he was a true middleweight terror when he fought guys other than the above mentioned
Could have, would have, didn't... but KTFO by pub brawler Pavlik, a caveman Froch, and flatfooted Abraham
Yep, he ducked everyone for 15 solid years, they just couldn't find him to make a deal given that he was hiding as the longest reigning undisputed middleweight champion in boxing history. A little thread necro, anyone?
I think Sergio dominated Pavlik as much as Hopkins did or even moreso. Hopkins doesnt have the activity of a williams but sergios speed and power is hopkins achilles. Sergio has a style similar to a prime Rj and that wouldnt be good news to any version of hopkins. He might beat williams but not so sure about sergio.
This post is pretty much ******ed. You'd have to be braindead or you didn't watch the fights to think Sergio dominated Pavlik worse than Hopkins did. Martinez' style has more in common with Sam Soliman than it does RJJ.
pre 40 hopkins dominates any middle weight of the last 20 years not named roy jones james toney. fact.
I've never even considered Martinez/Hopkins until now. I'd favour Hopkins. Martinez got into boxing at 20, right? I don't think he'll ever have the experience to compete with Hopkins. However, he is a one of a kind athlete and a magnificent counterpuncher, I just don't think there's anyone you can fight who's similar to Hopkins. Maybe Dawson or GJ, I'm not sure. Outside of that? Nobody.
Id pick Hopkins to win but not easily, i cant think of anyone that would have easily beaten Martinez... This is an overstatement Hopkins wins buy close decision.. 115-112 116-112 type of win.
Taylor would still easily beat Martinez, as damaged as he is now, were it not for the weight. Styles make fights and please explain how martinez outboxes a strong fast counter puncher like Taylor? The most Martinez does in that fight is make Taylor look bad. Martinez is a fun guy but second class compared to Bhop.
