No. Selective brawling is GOOD Boxing. If you are Brawling when it is in no way in your best interests? You are a crash dummy and not Boxing. I will watch it. Just like most Boxing fans will. Will I think of the "Loser" as "courageous", "a warrior", "tough", etc... No. He was a "skill-less fighter".

Morales is a GREAT example. The guy is a warrior, but when he fought a more offensively effective Pac? He used his skills. IMHO, and I know I will get heat for this, I don't consider Gatti/Ward some "great" Boxing match. Same as I don't Hearns/Hagler (since Hearns burned himself out like a novice) . Those were fights. Entertaining? Maybe. Examples of great Boxing? No.

A recent example I can find is Joe Calzaghe vs Jeff Lacy. The superior boxer completely destroyed the incoming slugger, both on the inside and out. Calzaghe spun Lacy around all nite, landing at will, and leaving Jeff with no answers.

I think just like defensive fighters are a rare breed so are technical punchers. By that I mean like Arguello, Duran post Leonard, the greatSRR, Monzon, etc. You think of punchers today and you think mayorga. Ugh. It seems the art of cutting the ring off is not being taught anymore.

    Random thoughts:

My favorite fights are usually fights where you get two evenly matched, heavy handed, boxer/puncher types.

The last Calderon fight I watched was boring as hell, but it wasn't boring because Calderon is a cutie-pie. It was boring because it was a complete mismatch.

Fans usually use the term "slugger" incorrectly. Very few good KO artists are "sluggers." For example, Edison Miranda hits freaking HARD, but he is not an efficient KO artist. Oganov hits hard, but Zuniga beat him up, knocked him out, and took his zero. My point is that most efficient KO artists use considerable boxing skills to make the KO happen, and should not be referred to as "sluggers."

And finally, it does not take great fighters to make a great fight. It takes good match making. The example I like to back this theory up with is the 2008 McKart/Marquez fight. Two older fighters, both considerably past their best, and yet it was a very entertaining fight that ended in a draw.

Maybe he is slick and just bad it?
So the amount of time him getting hit should not a be a factor if he is slick or not. Or at least you have to consider proper execution.

IMHO - Devon is slick (or at least trying to adapt that style), just young and still developing to show the advance skills that PBF and others can execute.

That's because fighters these days lack basic fundamentals of boxing. The old fighters, that are now thrown in the category of punchers and sluggers at least possessed the basic skills of defense, cutting off the ring, setting up behind a jab, and throwing in combinations. Even body punches are starting to disappear.

I don't understand the Post-Leonard Duran though. Duran used his skills to defeat Leonard in the first place. I can see a Post-Jones Barerra though.

I will cede you that point. There is a great, maybe even overwhelming, case for that too. IMHO, Malignaggi is "slick" and gets hit far too often. "Slick" is "slick"... even when it gets your butt kicked, however "slick" has NOTHING to do with what went wrong with Devon in that fight.

You can see Devon at his best against Urango. For all of his speed he sat down in spots attempting to actually HURT Urango and WIN the fight. I am not taking anything away from Bradley, but Devon looked to have been surviving in there, bka "game losing". I think the Kotelnik fight really had him doubting his gas tank and power. It showed.

I agree with you. "Slickness" should be used to score and even stop your opponent. Alexander had issues.

good post. Gatti-Ward another great evenly matched fight.

Duran was the perfect brawler but because he was so physical his cunning was always overlooked. He had speed, great head and upper body movement, and a master at cutting off the ring. Post leonard he wasnt using his legs anymore and was more resourceful with his punching resorting mostly to a jab and right hand. Maybe it had to do with aging, partying slowing him down, idk. But he did use a jab effectively to set up the right in his later years. Duran-Cuevas comes to mind.

These sweet science purists are annoying.
I appreciate all styles. Some fights I can watch repeatedly and with excitement, whatever the styles are. Other fights I can watch for only a few rounds before I get bored, whatever the styles are.

    Now WHO NECKS!
