After Floyd beat Hatton his popularity was at its peak both in the states and here in the UK. After that fight the most logical fight next for him was Cotto (obviously before Margo). He would of had the interest of the US fans, the UK and the Puerto Rican boxing fans, the PPV numbers would of been well over 1.5 million.

Personally i feel he would of outboxed and pot shotted to victory.

The next fight - Shane Mosley 2009 version. Again a Floyd Victory

Then maybe manny, Berto etc etc or move back to 154!

His stock would of been alot higher without the lay off with the added bonus of not p1ssing away his prime year (damage is done now)

Im a floyd fan dont get me wrong im just curious to hear some comments about this? Was he right to take a vacation at this point when he was so popular because over time people forget Espcially your average Joe over here.

    cheers

of course it wasn't right boxing wise to take a vacation right now. he left a lot of money on the table and chose not to fight pacman.

there is a chance that during floyd's vacation pacman will lose....and if he does guess what will happen....floyd will come out and say "i told you so....pacquiao is not the best" instead of saying " damn, i wanted pac to win so i can fight him in boxing's biggest ever fight".

floyd is very insecure and his style in the ring is not to take risks and he is taking that reserved approach with matchmaking also. even though he thinks he will beat pacman , he is not 100% sure so he is making excuses until he feels confident enough he would win.

Not sure that was what he is talking about in this thread. More Floyds lay of between the Hatton and JMM fight and what maybe could have been.

I actually understood his retirement, his heart wasnt in it anymore he had a lot of money and retired with perfect health, as a boxingfan we want to see him fight the best but I understood that from a personal perspective. I just wished he stayed retired or came back and fight in full force with clear plans not go srl on us in and out of retirement, conning people by dangling a carrot in front of us with big fights yet fight easier fights for easy money and then leave again but keep seeking attention.

I actually think this was one of the main reasons he did "retire", not only to give his body a rest, but his hands a rest also.

But yeah, since his comeback, the Mosley win is a good win...but everyone has been expecting the Pacquiao bout, and they havn't produced.

he could have been bigger or he could have lost his next fight and lost a lot of popularity.

Knowing Floyd and how savvy he is about his career, I think he did what was best for himself.

floyd has the potential to be one of the top 20 best ever. But i refuse to rate him as one. A 1st ballet HOF for sure, but nothing more in my book.
For some fighters like the K Bro's they have no one around to fight who would increase their status. Where Floyd has so many great fighters that he never ended up fighting.
Floyd not fighting Manny is like Ali not fighting Foreman or Frazier yet still walking around claiming he's the greatest.

He didn't duck Emmanuel PAC. Emmanuel still don't want to take the same drug tests that Floyd himself agreed to take. Seems he's got a whole lot to hide. E-man, that is.

But COTTO is a different story. Floyd straight up ducked him. That should have been Floyd's next fight after he took care of Hatton. Cotto was unbeaten then and was operating at his highest level. Without those loaded wraps, Margo woulda lost that fight to him.

People cheat in boxing. Fighters have to ensure that everything is on an even playing field. Floyd would sign to fight Emmanuel the day he agrees to OSDT (along with Floyd himself).

Except that Ali was on another strastosphere than Floyd in terms of p4p ability. If Floyd has potential to be top20 then guys like RJJ, Pac, have the potential to be top5 or top10

I agree, he has wasted his talents, which are/were exceptional. He was easily the best boxer since prime Roy Jones Jr (arguably better) and to sit on his arse like this is a great shame for boxing.

Unfortunately like many pros nowadays he is more concerned with easy paydays than his boxing legacy (he admitted it himself). When the money runs out and he is too old to fight, he will look back and have a lot of regrets about the opportunities he squandered.

Meanwhile, Pac goes on taking exciting, challenging fights, and converting many former Floyd fans to his camp. That's how to raise your profile and earning power, whilst also improving your legacy and leaving lots of exciting all-action fights for fans to drool over.

I bet you that the testing that Floyd is requesting is not even the same testing that they do at the Olympics. It's not really OSDT

Its possible that he could have beat them all and made him no doubt one of the greatest fighter ever but he didn't. Fact is he didn't fight the big names at their prime and had no career defining fight. He might be undefeated and have the talent, but he never fought the big name fighters. When u think leonard u think hagler. Ali u think frazier. Tyson n holyfield. Every great fighter fought all the big name fighters of their era, except floyd. Great talent poor resume.

Neither Marg nor Cotto would have enchanced Floyd's resume as neither of them or great fighters. I can understand that people wanted to see the fight at the time, but those guys are aren't in Floyd's league.

The fact is, if anything, Arum and Cotto ducked Floyd. You sit around all quiet and expect the p4p #1 fighter in the world with multiple titles in weight classes to chase after you. They never even tried to make a fight with after he beat Hatton Floyd, but yet somehow Floyd ducked them even though.

The fact is Floyd was willing to sign for these fights in 2006, but Arum was greedy with the money, and that pretty much ended their working relationship.

I disagree, Mayweather is a far superior fighter technically to either Ali or RJJ, both of whom had gaping flaws in their technique which led to several losses once their insane speed slowed down a bit. He is gifted enough to be top 10 or even 5. He's technically at least as good as Duran who is a top 10 p4per. He is not as great athletically or in heart, but technique counts for just as much as athletic gifts, look at Archie Moore or Joe Louis for example.

How many rounds has Floyd lost? He dominated top challengers like Castillo, Corrales, Hatton, Judah and Mosley, handing out not just defeats, but one-sided schoolings that made quality pros look like uneducated bar-room brawlers. He gave a 12 round boxing lesson to a fine fighter in Marquez, an excellent boxing technician who gave Pac 2 tough fights. He brutalized former champions like Gatti in one-sided beatdowns where he hardly took a punch all fight. Unlike Pac, he didn't lose.

Mayweather is the best technician since at least Duran, and maybe even since Willie Pep.
