In the event the fight is stopped because of injury the outcome depends a lot on how this injury was caused. There are multiple scenarios that depend on whether the injury was caused by a legal punch, was intentional or accidental. The refs are frequently not in the position to see what caused the injury and that leads to controversial decisions. Let's take Klitschko vs Lewis, for example.

The cut that stopped the fight was caused by a thumb not a legal punch (see the gif). The ref was on the side of the punch so there was no way he could have seen that. The doctor later stopped the fight because swelling from the cut above the eye was blocking Vitali's line of sight. By the boxing rules if the injury was caused by an intentional or an accidental foul and the fight continued and later stopped because legal punches made the injury worse - technical decision (scorecards) decide the winner. If there was an instant replay in place for ref to review how the cut was caused Vitali may as well had won a technical decision.

Another good example that would have benefited from an instant replay:
Cunningham vs Troy Ross. The replay showed that Cunningham hit Ross with an open glove that cause the cut and stopped the fight.

Also: Bradley vs. Campbell. The was initially ruled TKO win for Bradley and later overturned to no-decision because the cut was cause by an accidental headbutt.

Instant replay would be a disruptive inclusion to add into boxing, but even if it were not this fight would still be a poor example for instant replay. This fighter never hinged on the fact that Lewis's "thumb" cause the cut and it was widely accepted that Lewis cause the cut with a punch. There were no complaints from Klitschko's corner apart from the fact that Vitaly did not want it stopped.

It was a punch and then multiple additional punches that increased the damage. Vitali said after the fight was stopped it was "headbutt" but it wasnt it was punches. It was a fair TKO stoppage on cuts. Yeah it left us all feeling it was unresolved as LL was behind on the cards and what would have transpired we can only guess at. They were both tired and a lot is made of LL slumping onto his stool at the end of the last round. But that was a busy winning round for LL and he looked like he was just gettin his second wind! This subject has been done to death on here and gets tiresome. We can argue till the cows come home and will be no further on with getting a conclusion.
