This is a great match-up. Will this be on Sky I wonder. I havent seen much of McEwan, but you would think he has improved significantly from the days he mixed with Lee as an amateur. I wouldnt be putting any money on this one, but it is a fight to look forward to:good

In fairness to Nugent getting it for free means they dont have to give cash to the promoters. They would have to fork out 75k according to them to get an outside broadcast unit-(Podge highlights that is figure might be exaggerated).

And i say when they pick sport they do it like any other show and do it by figures. But Casey would get as much as Dunne i think (700,000)??

and again Nugent seemed genuine on the ph- also he highlighted how they have supported boxing since 2003- claiming they are unrivaled by BBC< TV3 UTV etc in the amount of boxing they have shown

I have to say I agree with Podge I think it is very exaggerated. You can cut costs with a broadcast, just use fewer cameras and have one of the camera men double up for the interviews too - it is more work for the camera team but more cost efficient. That is how Setanta did it when they filmed the amateurs. That would have done fine.

And the additional advertisement revenue during each round is something that would surely cover the costs. I am at all swayed by what Nugent has said, RTE could show this fight.

But, I totally agree with one thing, they have served us well in the past with their coverage of boxing, certainly in comparison to anyone else in the UK (bar Sky) so this current stalemate makes is more baffling. My view is that there is more to this than economics, my guess it is more about boxing politics.

Jonny, fair play to you pal, without wanting to sound patronising that's quality journalism, giving both sides a proper fair shake. RTE can't complain you didn't give them a lengthy response.

What I'd say though is this: RTE claim they are unrivalled since 2003 - with respect to Ryle, Bernard Dunne was a no-brainer. As charismatic as Hamed, it would have been some dunderhead executive to NOT put him on TV. Lee, Macklin et al followed when boxing was on a high. Now Dunne is gone, where's the commitment to new stars?

75,000 shekels is a lot of green, no doubt. But I wonder, and Im not trying to be a smartass here, but how many lads have accompanied Ryle to the Millenium Stadium as part of the RTE team?

If there's no other RTE lads along with him, then it's bad form of me to question it and I'll apologise in advance, but if there is I'd ask: Why are RTE employees in a foreign stadium covering two countries other than Ireland? Why not use the Beeb's live feed and broadcast from back home to save cash? I'm all for showing the Six Nations, don't get me wrong, but priorities are for Irish teams and athletes if RTE is so flat broke.

Exactly. This should be cut - if RTE crying poverty. Jaysus Setanta never sent anyone to Vegas for their fights, but we still got great studio coverage from their London location.

Spoke with Ryle Nugent, Jim Rock and Mick Dowling on this for de page tomorrow lads

And I'll get the quotes out to the sites tomorrow as well for those who can't get the sun

Oh and I'm told talks with TV3 and Setanta Sports are going well - but people might have to settle for Setanta Sports 1 (the pay one) as Setanta Ireland is a full one on the night with rugby and GAA
