if there was still an exclusive deal in place- they wouldnt have even met with Dolphil and Hyde.. Both met RTE and had a positive meeting.

Why not? They wouldnt be breaking a deal (even if that was in place) by listening to what other potential customers had to offer? What is a positive meeting - they got nothing. Hyde told me RTE were dragging their heels - I dont interpret that as positive.

So its a black eye for Irish pro boxing in Ireland on RTE. IF you were to look at RTE on the hold. How much money does it cost them to run the 3 stations in rte1 , 2 and TG4? The amount of cash for each station would add up a lot. So if they are crying poverty why not get rid of 1 of those stations?

Saying that RTE over the years has been great. It seems to me that with Nugent a big fan of Rugby they have gone all out on the Rugby this year big time. If my memory is correct they took over the rights to show the Magniers League be it on RTE or TG4 and most weekends they would show 2 to 3 games live depending on were the games are played. Also they bought the rights to the Rugby World Cup from Setanta but is that value for money. The games wont get big numbers apart from the Irish games and the times of the games dont help either with it being in New Zealand this year. A highlight package and just the Ireland games would of been enough along with the semis and final.

As for the other stations it will be a lot harder as they are depending on advertisements but TV3 has been doing a lot of Irish made programes. Maybe they have some extra cash because they would normaly show the Rugby World Cup and apart from the GAA coverage they have for this summer and the football they dont show a lot of sport. If my memory is right on the first night of TV3 they showed a live fight from the US think it was a Roy Jones Jnr fight and then they showed the one in Tallaght.

Setanta on the other hand well it is showing Frampton live the timing of the fight seems a bit bad as they always show the live GAA Football leagues during the next few months but maybe this could be a option in the long term for the likes of Peters and Dolphil IF RTE are not going to show any boxing any more.

Just back from the stadium lads some very good fights tonight Irish boxing is in safe hands with the talent coming through .

Was very imprssed with Willies younger brother Miles Casey(another big bang in the making), also George Bates , Michael McDonagh , Keiran Forde , Christy Joyce and Stephen Broadhurst all looked like top top prospects for the future , also Joe Ward won his bout 14 -0 up at the time of the stoppage in the 2nd round all I can say is the lad is god gifted , he has it all speed, power, foot work, head movement, the only thing I will say is he looks a bit small for the weight height wise and he looked a bit fleshy although he will grow into 81kg nicely over the next few years .

Anthony Coyle was a big dissapointment got beaten on a countback and just didnt get going maybe he struggles at the weight as he was very tall for 69kg .

Well done to all the media boys on here for their probing questions to RTE. This now isn't only about Casey's world title shot, it's about the future of professional boxing in the 26 counties. If RTE walk away from boxing now, what happens to the likes of Andy Murray and Paddy Hyland [boxers on the verge of major titles], and all the other boxers who have been showcased on this channel. It's worrying times.

Hyde and Dolphil were told there was no contract with Peters. since Dunne retired it has been a fight by fight deal. I heard when Dolphil and Hyde left the meeting they were 99 percent sure rte would show the fitght. Nugent was keen, then we he done the figures he couldnt affors it-i am as gutted as anyone else re this- but i dnt think barrating RTE (who seem genuine is the ans). If it makes great TV sense why are the others not jumping on it? I think we need to come up a different idea and think a bit wider to get it on TV

Lets be honest re rugby- it pulls in massive figures it appeals across the board. I would go mad if they didn't show the world cup as they do the soccer.Rugby is the fastest growing sport in Ireland-its has the advantage of not being minority. Plus it ensures the ABC1 Market (rich people) so sponsors and advertisers are mad for it. How many rugby players to endorsement deals compared to boxers. My local rugby am rugby club pulls in ten times more sponsorship in a year than a single boxing event does...

Meaning if you are Ryle, and looking it as a business man not a fan, if you cant afford he cant afford it? and its not as enticing, as a business man as the more viewed sports. Plus it cost Setanta 15k for the rights of the managers league for a season? thats dirt cheap.

I think we need to get after Setanta and TV3 and show that boxing has a fan base

Middleweight contender Bryan Vera (18-5, 11KOs) may receive a well deserved reward for his upset win over former champion Sergio Mora (22-2-2, 6KOs). Vera won a close ten round split decision to become only the second man, with the late Vernon Forrest being the other, to beat Mora. The scores were 96-94 on two cards for Vera, with the third judge scoring 96-94 for Mora.
Promoter Lou DiBella advised ***********.com that if Andy Lee (24-1, 18KOs) is able to beat undefeated Craig McEwan (19-0, 10KOs) on March 12, then he would explore the possibility of making a Lee-Vera rematch.
In 2007, Vera got off the floor in the first round to stop Lee within seven. Lee has won nine in a row since the loss. The fight with McEwan is the HBO-televised co-feature to Sergio Martinez-Sergei Dzinziruk at Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Nail on the head there Jonny, if it was such a no brainer for rte then how come tv3, setanta, sky, tg4 aren't all banging down the door to get it. I think as boxing fans we are being blinded here to the fact that the country is pretty f****d and this is an example of that.

Of course boxing fans are going to be up in arms but do you think any of the average rugby, soccer and gaa heads really care too much about boxing being on tv?

Other than Dunnes world title fights what other irish world title fights have been shown on irish terrestrial tv? McGuigans were on bbc from what i can remember with delayed highlights on rte occasionally. All McCullough and Steve Collins world title fights were on wither sky or itv except for the McCallum and Reggie Johnson ones which I don't think had any tv over here.

Anyway I think if tv3 had any money then surely they would be jumping on board this one to try and get one up on rte.
