How long did you train before fighting?

I've been training for almost 6 months now. I started doing it mostly to lose weight. But a lot of guys in my gym are gearing up for an upcoming fight night, and I'm... envious I guess. I told myself I wouldn't fight until I got a lot faster, and now I'm second guessing myself.

So my question is: How long were you in training before you had your first fight? And did you feel like you were ready then?

ive been training (to fight, not for fitness) for 12 months and will probably have my first fight in about 2 months. it would have been earlier but because of work and other crap ive missed the last months training and im going to miss the next 2 weeks. i sparred with a bloke who had a few fights about 6 months ago and it was pretty even according to both our trainers but my trainer has always said he wont put his fighters in until he is 90% sure they'll win...i trained at a different gym for 3 months when i moved and the trainers there wanted me to fight but i knew i was moving home again so i didnt bother

depends on you and/or your gym

my gym never used to put anyone in until they have had atleast a full years training while another gym i went to put people in after 5-6 months of training.

5.5 months training 5-6 days per week. I destroyed my opponent so I probably could've fought sooner.

I've been training for 2 months and had my second sparring session today. I was in there with these smaller, faster, way more experienced guys and the last guy tore me up. Bloodied my nose and lip. I did much better against the bigger, slower guy in the first round and the guy last week who was more on my skill level. I'd say I'm about 6-8 months away from being able to step in for real. I don't wear headgear so it's pretty real already.

Not wearing a headguard in sparring does not make it any more like a fight. Sparring is never the same as a fight.

9 months. was 12 when started, and had first fight on my 13th birthday.

  12. I was given the chance to fight after a month ! Which was way to early although I was fit I was not ready for a fight AT ALL and it was last minute like a couple of days before an event . The gym I was training at was a joke , and the trainer had no idea about boxing whatsoever .

Not with this cat I did a round with. I sparred yesterday with a guy much better than he was but he sparred like a professional and wasn't looking to bloody me up. I think the guy that made me leak had a flashback of when bigger guys used to beat him up in high school :p. He knew I just started but came at me a bit harder than I expected. Oh well....it was a good experience.

The only thing "real" about sparring without head gear is the brain damage.

Gear up to give yourself far more time sparring. :thumbsup

I have had 5 fights in less then a year. 5-0 but I would tell you to wait at least 6 months. My coach likes to throw people right in there. Most of them get beat and dont come back to the gym. I dont like that about him, Most of them dont have proper stance or know how to throw a 1-2 and he throw them in there anyway.
