Why was Hopkins beating Trinidad considered such a big win for Hopkins?

Fair play concerning Winky but the weight is no excuse for the schooling Pavlik received.

I agree. Making Winky come to 170 was pointless, but Pavlik was always a smw/lhw burning himself down severely in order to make 160 at the weigh-in.

When he fought Gary Lockett, it looked like Haye-Valuev!

Pavlik had already fought and beaten Jermain Taylor at a 166 catchweight, and apparently will never fight as low as 160 again.

He was 178 in the ring vs Martinez FFS (Maravila was 167), that's no middleweight!

Nah, Hopkins had no size or weight advantage over Pavlik IMO, he just schooled the **** out of him plain and simple.

1 - i agree evans ashira should be nowhere near a world title fight :deal

2 - no wonder trinidad was considered so invincible at middleweight taking out joppy with a phenominal list of victims like that :rofl (only in america )

3 - props for not ducking the question on joppys top 5 wins though :deal

4 - can you answer the other question :think

5 - hope my spelling was satisfactory

Tito was seen as a top 3 P4P fighter at that time along with Mosley and Jones Jr. He had moved up to 154lbs and decimated the title holders there. He didn't just beat Vargas and Reid he ruined them. He then moved up to middleweight and anilhilated Joppy.

Hopkins was seen as decent champion in a mediocre division much like Calzaghe was prior to his win over Lacy and Kessler. So for Hopkins to put on a clinic against what was deemed a superior elite fighter was a big deal.

As for Wright beating Tito. It lacked the impact because Hopkins had shown how to beat Tito and Wright simply repeated what we had already seen. So wasn't deemed as good a victory.

Agreed, I was 1 of the few that said Hopkins would win a clear decision, I predicted an 8-4/9-3 job but he suprised me with a masterful 12-0.

Ps. Did you check your Sakuraba thread ?
I posted in it a couple of days ago.

so can we agree that part of the enormity (hope thats spelt right?) people make of this victory was because ignorant, narrow minded people severly under-rated hopkins and over-rated the middleweight capabilities of trinidad at the time?

1 - I think that's the first time in history you have ever said something which wasn't designed to blow Calzaghe's balls. :yikes

    2 -

    (a) You can't argue that Joppy wasn't a top mw when he took Howard Eastman's zero, won the WBA title by knocking out an undefeated fighter on the other side of the world, and won a good few other world title fights.

    (b) And Tito's win over him wasn't just impressive because of the calibre of Joppy, but because of the calibre of Tito's performance. Joppy took both Hopkins and Jermain Taylor the full 12 rounds, and Tito (in his 1st fight at 160) just completely blew him away with ease.

    (c) If Joe Calzaghe had moved up to lhw and completely dominated and knocked out the WBA title holder who had never been stopped before, you'd be foaming at the mouth about how good it was.

    (d) I'm sure you will agree that Calzaghe-Sheika was a very good win even though Sheika never proved to be a great fighter and doesn't have a strong top 5 wins. The reason for that is the quality of Calzaghe's execution of Sheika, as compared to how Sheika did against other top fighters (Lacy included). Please apply the same logic to Tito-Joppy.

3 - I've never ducked anything in my life (that's why my boxing career didn't quite pan out as planned :D).

4 - What other question? I didn't know there was one. Repeat it.

5 - Your spelling was indeed adequate and deserves a gold star.

Hindsight is a funny thing. But even though we know now that it was a weight too far for Tito, especially against the true middleweight champ, i feel Hopkins would have been a tough night for anyone in history that night. It was a masterful, bullying display from him, he wanted recognition so badly, and i sometimes feel he could beat Hagler on that type of form. Only sometimes!

1 - the other question was did hopkins call mosley out after beating odlh and trinidad?

2 - tell us about your attempt at a boxing career (genuinely no ****-take involved).

:patsch ****s like you just don't get it. You want to talk about American bias or hype rather then the actual fighty or history surrounding it. That's why you and your girlfriend Bailey are a waste of time, other then to wind up.

I wouldn't put it so bluntly but to a degree yes. Being a long time Hopkins fan I was confident Hopkins would win though I expected him to use his usual rough house tatics and overwhelm Tito late on. What I didn't expect was a clinic. Though I was in the minority as most so called experts and pundits favoured Tito.

And yes I think Tito was overrated much like Lacy was before Calzaghe ruined him. De La Hoya showed that movement would make Tito look far from invincible and Hopkins executed a similar strategy.

1 - No, Hopkins did not call out Mosley as far as I know. Maybe he did, but I'm not aware of it. I doubt it.

2 - Nah, I don't like talking about my life on this forum. Too many weirdos on here.

:yikes **** sake. Tito Trinidad is an HOF lock, a 3-weight world champion, and one of the best offensive fighters of his era. Jeff Lacy was a musclebound mediocrity who was outboxed by Omar Sheika in his prime. Horrible, horrible comment.
