Virgil Hill should be in there. Why isn't he? 20 some title defenses and wins over Stewart, Czyz, Tate 2 times, Maske,Tiozzo. 3 times a champion. 2 at light heavyweight.
Virgil Hill 1.Ezzard Charles 2.Sam Langford 3.Gene Tunney 4.Archie Moore 5.Tommy Loughran 6.Michael Spinks 7.Billy Conn 8.Harold Johnson 9.Bob Foster 10.Philadelphia Jack O' Brien
I think he has a good argument for the top 10. But not higher than say number 10 or 9 (9 might be a stretch)? He should be in the Top 12 by anybody though.
Ezzard Charles Archie Moore Tommy Loughran Michael Spinks Billy Conn Gene Tunney John Henry Lewis Harold Johnson Harry Greb Bob Foster
How much has O'Brien done at lhw, and does an overweight win over him during his very last year in the ring hold much weight anyway?
i've always had the impression that the light-heavyweight division never gets the respect that it should. just too overshadowed by the heavyweights. the heavyweights at the moment aren't that memorable. but however years ago when they were, i believe that the casual boxing fan would've been able to name some heavyweights, but not the light-heavies.
yeah why not? because he didn't fight in the 1940s? Why not Virgil? I do not insult you guys for not having him as much as why not?
I like Virgil Hill and have huge respect for him but his resume and achievement isn´t good enough. Top20, yes but even Top15 would be farfetched.
Virgil was a very good fighter and he deserves respect as well as as honourable mention. I do think he is top 20 which is an amazing achievement itself considering how many great fighters there have been in the light-heavyweight division. I am going to repost mine 1. Ezzard Charles 2. Sam Langford 3. Archie Moore 4. Gene Tunney 5. Michael Spinks 6. Billy Conn 7. Bob Foster 8. Tommy Loughran 9. Harold Johnson 10. Roy Jones Jr Honourable mention: Harry Greb, Tommy Gibbons, Jimmy Bivins, John Henry Lewis, Philidelphia Jack O Brien, Vigril Hill
On the assumption that every day in every way boxing and boxers are getting better and better THEN it follows that the current top 10 is the ALL TIME top 10. And since computers have NO BIAS the IBO computerized list is absolute and authoritative for FEB 2011. SO here you have them 1 BERNARD HOPKINS USA 46 former world 2 CHAD DAWSON USA 28 former ibo 3 ZSOLT ERDEI HUN 36 former 2 weight 4 CHRIS HENRY USA 29 former nabf 5 ADRIAN DIACONU ROM 32 CANADA 6 GABRIEL CAMPILLO SPA 31 former wba 7 ROY JONES USA 42 former 6 weight 8 NATHAN CLEVERLEY GB 23 WBO interim 9 YUSEF MACK USA 31 NABA 10 KARO MURAT GER 27 WBO intercontinental If i didn't agree with that assumption my list might look more like: 1 Ezzard Charles 2 Archie Moore 3 Bob Foster 4 Michael Spinks 5 Bob Fitzsimmons 6 Tommy Loughran 7 Jack Dillon 8 Billy Conn 9 Philadelphia Jack O'Brien 10 Jimmy Bivins Oh - I rate Sam at Supermiddle (which I think he was for the prime of his career) Harry at Middle and Gene at Heavy for those who wonder where they are Roy is just off this chart at the moment as is John Henry, Matthew Saad, Harold, Tiger Jack and the 'other' Tommy in no particular order.
This, the division has more depth than people think. He also lost to the highest quality of fighter he encountered, often in pretty conclusive fashion. Good fighter, but any top 10 divisional has to be great. With that said I think i'll sub out Philly Jack O' Brien for RJJ(I combine the Jr. weight classes with the original ones, otherwise ranking divisionally is annoying as ****).
