A-rod, Jeter, Jordan, Labron James, Shaq...

just a quick 5 wealthier than Mayweather

I root for Mayweather not because of who he is on the outside. I root for him because so many people hate him so much. I like rooting for the villain. This has been true forever! Viva Mayorga lol! What would Batman be with no Joker? In the world of boxing there are so many fighters who when approached about who they want to fight next will punk out and say "I just fight whoever they put in front of me." The technical term for this is a ***** move :) I like that Mayweather has his own take on these things. I wildly disagree with him, but I like that he stirs things up. He has affectively made a situation where EVERYONE has an opinion of him. A guy like Juan Diaz, (a fighter I like) I can say people could care less about because he is too reserved. Mayweather makes you love or hate him and its because of this that I root for him as a character.

To put it in other terms, in the world of cartoons, the Roadrunner is the name of the series... but it is the antics of Wil E Coyote that makes people tune in... In a world of forgetable faces, and too many ABC belts, Mayweather makes people watch the sport because you either love him or hate him. There is no in between!

Where Manny is going to get in trouble against PBF is when he does that little lunge into range, set, then throw combos, then he hops back out. It's worked for him so long that it's just "what he does". The problem is that when he makes that little lunge, he's gonna get caught with a straight right that backs his ass up. There are people saying PBF doesn't have the "power" to keep Manny off him...lol, Ok bet on that and see how it goes. I'm not saying PBF is Tommy Hearns, but he can hurt you and he's going to make Pac timid, hesitant, and confused IMHO.

Mayweather is an entertainer. Just like Kanye West; incredibly talented but his arrogance and attitude makes him pretty entertaining or off putting. You have to understand that what we see of Floyd is what he wants us to see or rather what the media wants to sell. If Floyd made a video detailing his contributions towards society whether it's adding jobs via his business ventures that stimulate the economy, or donating his time or money to different causes you'd get a different impression of him. Truth is he's always wanted to be marketed that way. Bob Arum didn't like it because he didn't think it would work. You see casual fans who watch boxing, want to see blood sometimes which is why MMA has become popular. But when you have a style like Mayweather's which is defensive it becomes harder to appreciate unless you are watching it because it's Mayweather. His personality needs to be dynamic in order to attract casual fans frankly because his style lacks that killer instinct/destroyer mentality that made Tyson famous.

I think that he does care about his legacy, despite what he might say but circumstances regarding his relationship with Bob Arum have precluded him from making big fights with other Top Rank fighters. So Cotto, Margarito, Pacquiao were fights that were simply going to be tough to make in any regard.

    1. He called out Mosley in 1999 but Mosley declined. He did the same in 2006 and Shane declined again and instead of Mosley, he fought Oscar De la Hoya.

    2. He tried to make a fight with Cotto in 2005 after the Gatti fight, Cotto after seeing his masterful performance said he wasn't ready. Which is fine seeing as to how he was still developing. A second Cotto fight came with strings attached from what I remember.

    3. The fight with Margarito never materialized because it came with strings which would have limited his income. Arum offered him 7 million for Cotto and 6 million for Hatton and De la Hoya was off the table entirely. Mayweather decided that he'd rather go it alone. Financially it worked out much better for him. It's unfortunate that some of the top fighters were Top Rank Fighters because he was never afraid of making that fight.

    4. His "retirement" can be attributed to many things. It's no secret that his brittle hands have broken in the past in many fights to the extent that he's used allegedly using different supplements including lidocaine/xylocaine to help with the pain. It's likely that he's not 100% physically or mentally to continue. Vacation is bs, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt because I'm not fully versed on his situation apart from what I've read.

His personality is his selling point. He's gone out of his way to be the villain in every fight and the "Money Mayweather" persona has made him famous.

I don't agree with his smear campaign against Pacquiao; it is despicable but it has give him alot of attention which ultimately leads me to believe that he wants the fight. But he wants to make it big.

Can't defend that. But from what I understand it's alleged.

Considering how many fighters end up broke after long and physically taxing careers I'd wager to say that he's ensuring that his future is secure. After all I don't see many fans coming to Holyfield's rescue when his home was facing foreclosure.

It's smack talk, designed to stir emotions. It can either alienate you or build up a fanbase either way it gets you noticed.

These are links that suggest that he is infact a warm hearted person who cares. He's donated time and money and had given back to a community to uplift those who are less fortunate than he is. His persona is only that, his persona.

Manny Pacquiao doesn't need that persona because of his style. Naturally aggressive fighters don't need to develop that kind of personality because their style speaks for itself. Shane Mosley is a nice guy and has a calm and respectful demeanor but he has never earned the kind of money that Mayweather has earned simply because he's been unable to market himself despite beating De la Hoya.

I'm actually going for pac to pull it off. Part of the reason is I guess Im sentimental and love to see seemingly invincible guys lose their 0, especially ones as cocky as floyd.
secondly, I dont think pac would be gunning for a fight with floyd, unless, like schmelling inthe first joe louis fight "he seez zomething".......although what that "something" is I have no idea
thirdly, didnt judah, a southpaw have more "moments" in his fight with floyd than most anyone else?

People watch Floyd because he is great at what he does. I could care less about what he does outside of the ring. I think that is the difference, you care what he does in his personal life. I never understood that. We didn't become fans of our fav fighter because of what he does in his personal life, we became fans of their skills and talent. His trash talking is hilarious to me. You can easily tell that he talks trash for promotion. He isn't like Duran who is an ass after his fights. Also who cares if he flashes money. Why should it matter that he talks about how much he has? Hating on this forum is a disease. Some people seriously act like they are on their period when it comes to Floyd.

i think the fact he is so flawless as a fighter is one of the reasons for his downfalls ironically. he knows he's better than everyone and i imagine he has numerous yes men who remind him of it every day. all this adulation and sucking up has made him soft and vunerable. he's become self obssesed and money obsessed. i don't like his team, they seem as ****ed up and unstable as he is. he needs someone like emanuel steward to steer him in the right drection.

The real answer here that is not being said yet is that "Floyd is black and I'm also black. We share the same skin color so I am his fan."

    100 agree...
Manny's ability to throw combinations is going to backfire on him VERY Bad. When you meet a fast, slick, accurate counterpuncer the skills manny posseses can easily be neutralised and everyone will see why PBF will beat manny, he's not scared and this isnt going to be no fluke...skills pays the bills

There is no harder athlete in any sport worldwide that I know of, that is easier to defend than Floyd Mayweather. He is the absolute definition of what every coach around the world fears that their young athletes will become (outside of the success of course).

Floyd's massive PPV numbers and sell out arenas are not as a result of Black people. Floyd has alot of Hispanic and White Fans as well.

Floyd has essentially marketed himself the way rappers do.
And we all know that Rap isn't exclusively bought or listened to by Black people alone.

So even if this was true, it would simply be a half truth because there is alot more to it.
