    Shogun Silva @205

    Silva St Pierre @185

    ????

We are nearing one of the most iconic super fights in many years (since the Pride HW glory days) in MMA , but whats the better fight should Shogun beat Jones , assuming ofcourse St Pierre knocks Sheilds over !!!!

Its not even in doubt. St. Pierre vs. Silva is a fight that has been building since 2009. Shogun looked great against Machida but as far as UFC fans are concerned that's the only time he's looked great...indeed against Griffin and Coleman he looked ****ing awful. Plus Shogun has came nowhere near to cleaning oft his division and could have interesting matches against Evans, Jackson, Griffin, Couture.

Silva won't fight Rua. It'd be a more exciting fight and closer, no doubt, but it won't happen.

Shogun has more than enough rivals at 205. Some are new challenges like Evans, maybe Couture and some can be re-visited like Rampage and Machida.

GSP needs Silva after Shields. He needs to have that new division fight.

They are in no rush to fight eachother, Silva said post fight that he would stay at 185 after GSP.

Rampage is next if he wins.

It's always special in boxing or MMA when the p4p number 1 and 2 fight each other. Silva will have a huge advantage in natural size and will win imo.

Silva vs. GSP and it's not even remotely close. Not at all.

This would be the biggest fight ever. Period. No real debate. These two guys have demolished their divisions. GSP has been more dominant then any champion ever (with respect to taking the least damage and being in virtually zero relatively dangerous positions) and on the other we have Silva who is a true mixed martial artist who knows seemingly a dozen + martial arts and blends them seamlessly, but has, at times, seemed beatable.

There is no better fight to be made. Even if money/organization was not an issue, there still wouldn't be a better match up.

For hype GSP/Anderson, in sporting terms clearly Anderson/Shogun. Much less of a size difference in the latter, Anderson has already tested the waters at 205 and action wise I think it would be vastly superior.

    completely agree with this.

I think GSP has a very unlikely chance at beating Silva, via lay n prey.

Interestingly enough Shogun is all wrong for Silva stylistically, a opponent who could match silva standing and would also be a threat on the ground. But it would be an action packed fight in which Andy still has a shot to win.

And you're saying this based on...his two fights with Machida? Chuck? Coleman? Griffin? Or are you pulling way back when in Pride? What's your benchmark?

In GSP and Anderson, we have guys that have cleaned out divisions. Rua hasn't done that. He hasn't even defended his title yet! As far as skills, GSP has them both beat as he's the most well rounded fighter in the sports history and has the most complete skill set. (I'll say it here because I'm positive you'll say something to this effect, I'm not saying that he's a more skilled striker or anything like that, because I think Anderson is a more skilled striker, but I'm saying that GSP is more skilled overall then both Silva and Rua)

The only possible reasonable point of argument you can press on is size. On everything else, and I do mean everything, you have to be insane or ******ed to argue that the fight should be Silva vs. Rua.

gsp vs silva is clearly the bigger fight for the ufc moneywise. But silva vs rua would be the better fight of the two.

I was agreeing with moreorless who said just that.

Are we pretending that rua's career started in the ufc with his fight with Forest Griffin?

GSP has wrestling covered in his fight with Silva nothing else, but you say he is more well rounded than both Rua and Anderson? I say rua is the most well rounded of the three, silva might be a better striker than shogun, but shogun has the better ground ability.

No, that's not what I'm saying at all. What I'm saying to you, and I meant to say it to moreorless but was kind of annoyed at the suggestion, is that if you want to accept the stuff he did in Pride, which you seemingly do, then you must accept all the stuff since. You can't just parse it out and take the "Best of..." and say that's the finished product. The only good performances he's had in the UFC is against Machida. His fight against Chuck wasn't nearly on par with the performances of Pride or the Machida fights. His performance against Coleman was ridiculously bad at best. Griffin submitted him, which, really, no shame in that, Griffin is a very solid fighter for sure. (Yeah, yeah, same old shitty line, "Oh, he was injured!" Great, so was Forrest, so that argument is ****. Two injured fighters fighting...let me know when two 100% fighters fight.)

And it's amazingly obvious that GSP is more well rounded then both of them. The wrestling ability of both Rua and Silva is the glaring weakness in both of their games. They're both amazing strikers and great BJJ fighters and very good in the clinch, but their wrestling is severely lacking. GSP lacks in no area. He's the best functional wrestler in MMA. You can try and argue that but it'd be like trying to argue with a mathematician that 2 + 2 does not equal 4. It'd be a waste of time.

So, therefore, the most interesting fight would be GSP vs. Silva because they're clearly the two most skilled fighters in the sport and have accomplished the most. Rua isn't even in the discussion at this point. (By that same standard, neither is Velasquez or Edgar...they just haven't built up the clout in their respective divisions, although Cain is well on his way to doing that, and Edgar, provided he gets by Maynard, is in the same boat)

I'll say it again, if you could pick the best possible match up in all of Mixed Martial Arts, where money or organization was not a problem, this would be it because when you boil it all down, they're not only the two most dominant against the most skilled competition but they're the most skilled as well.

As a true MMA fan, the easy choice is Shogun/Anderson for me. I don't think GSP vs Anderson will be competitive. Awful matchup for GSP. But Shogun vs Anderson, now that would be a sick fight.
