True. And then if he fights and beats Martinez, "oh well Martinez was old".

Hatton was the 140 pound king- true

But Hatton did not fight Mayweather at that throne - He sent someone, a pretender, to fight Gayweather at 147.

Floyd approached Kosta Tszyu when he moved to 140 and the fight had difficulty coming off because of Tszyu was in serious negotiations with Hatton. Being a Showtime fighter, there would have been some difficulty making the fight anyway but the preoccupation with Hatton from Tszyu's camp and the fact that it would have been easier to make, made it priority in which the winner would end up meeting Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Meanwhile back at camp Floyd, Mayweather and his team was contemplating a break from Top Rank and he opted for a buyout of his contract because at that point he had a limited window, one that would have expired before the De La Hoya fight. Arum said he would have extended the window if Mayweather had asked. What Arum wouldn't do, was raise the guarantees for other fights outlined in the contract.

Arum said while Mayweather would have taken the $8 million to fight Margarito, he asked for a $10 million guarantee to fight opponents such as Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton, when Arum was only willing to guarantee $7 million.

Arum said Mayweather also asked for $20 million to fight De La Hoya, a fight Arum said he wasn't interested in participating in.

"That's not in the cards," Arum said. "He wants $20 million for the De La Hoya fight? It's not there. Sometimes, my man, you gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. We'll talk about things down the road."

    So let's recap here:

In 1999 Floyd tried to get a fight with Mosley at 140. Shane declined on the basis that Floyd wasn't a name fighter and he pursued a fight with De la Hoya
which he later got and won. In 2006, after the Vargas fights Mayweather tried to fight Mosley but Shane wasn't ready to come down in weight and wanted to take a break. Floyd instead got the coveted fight with De la Hoya.

Cotto, Clottey, Margarito are all Top Rank fighters and as a result securing fights with Top Rank fighters proved difficult. But even when he was under Top Rank, his camp approach Cotto's camp. After they saw the way he demolished Arturo Gatti they openly admitted that they were not ready for Mayweather.

Hatton who was sitting at ringside during that fight (as was Cotto) opted to defer their meeting as well.

Floyd Mayweather in 2006 also tried to get a fight with Winky Wright however Winky priced himself out. As usual.

Paul Williams is not a name fighter. Though boxing fans would certainly appreciate it and it would be a competitive fight; Floyd was more interested in securing name fighter. After all, Mosley, De la Hoya, Cotto and Hatton weren't exactly rushing to face Paul Williams either.

Most marquee fighters are opportunists and frankly Floyd Mayweather is no exception. His resume is filled with either missed opportunities or better financial offers. In any case he still has some very solid wins under his belt.

His talent is undeniable and he's made some pretty good fighters look ordinary after a few rounds with them. Is he the best of his generation? Time will tell but one thing is for certain, to blame his level of his opposition or the timing of certain fights entirely on him would be a gross oversight of what's really happening.

Hatton was the one who didnt want to fight when they were at 140. I have the ring mag from the end of 2005, and they talked said Hatton fight couldnt be made bc he wants to make money off that title before stepping up to Mayweather, and that Judah v. Mayweather was the best fight that could be made.

Interesting post...but most are just happy to just oversimplify it like the world is black and white. And dont worry folks, we ALL want Pac v. Mayweather, but I have no doubt in my mind that there is some serious conspiring going on behind the scenes, especially b/w Arum and Mayweather.

The difference between Pac and Hoya is that Pac has won most of his big name fights, while Oscar lost a lot of his. Disagree with that for me. Not knocking on Hoya, but that's a fact.

It is like a fight between a wife and a husband, with the wife keep bringing up past histories.

Mayweather : "because you did not fight me before, therefore we shall fight now at 147!!!!"

So what if Hatton did not fight him at that time?

The important thing is WHEN THEY FOUGHT, it was at 147. Are we missing a point because you are claiming a glory for Mayweather at 140 against Hatton.

Mosley is a good fight for Pacquiao. Mayweather has already beat him.
Other curent opitions are Martinez at 154. I think all three boxers can make 154. Berto is the best at 147 after Mayweather, Pacquiao and Mosley. Either he or Mosley is the best puncher in the devision. The winner of a Bradley/Khan fight.

Im one of the few people that would of gave margo a chance of winning this fight. Im talking PRIME MARGO.. Floyd would of been on the run either way.. In the end I would have to take floyd by UD! Im sure floyd would of made an appearance on americas most wanted due to all the running he would of had to do against margo!!

No1 will ever b satisfied...I agree that the PBF vs Cotto fight is one that shuldve happened, other than that I'm pretty happy with his resume (except the JMM farce!).

All we need is for him to fight either Pac OR Martinez (or both!) And he can hang it up for certain bn an ATG imo

Floyd should have fought those people when he was champ, instead he took out a couple soft touches then retired when the division started looking strong. He only came back after his financial situation went to ****, which it will inevitably do again because he spends money like an 11 yr old with an unending allowance.

**** me, some idiots in here.

He beats an undeafted Hatton "not his proper weight!"
He beats ODLH in his own weight "shot to ****!"

You'll get the same people in other threads saying Pacquiao the champ! Why should he move down to fight Marquez. Same thing.

    DOUBLE STANDARDS.
