Why was Calzaghe beating Lacy considered such a big win for Calzaghe?

It wasnt the weakest division at the time. It was one of the strongest with 3 undefeated world champions and a 3 time champ. This is a 2005 rating and Calzaghe fought Lacy at the beginning of 06

1. Calzaghe undefeated world champ
2. Kessler undefeated world champ (undefeated and not suffering double vision)
3. Lacy undefeated world champ (undefeated, and tell me an active American SMW with a overall better win resume. There arent many)
4. Beyer (3 time WBC champ)
5. Mundine (2 time WBA champ)
6. Danny Green now a world rated CW
7. Siaca (former world champ)
8. Grant (former WBO MW champ)
9. Reid (former world champ, and fighter that looked unlucky against Ottke)
10. Andrade (undefeated at this time and looked unlucky not to KO Bute years later)

Thats not weak

 

Because Lacy had beaten a man (Robin Reid) who had arguably beaten Calzaghe (I had Reid beating Calzaghe by 2 points).

But against Lacy, Reid was past it and weight-drained. He was there for a payday and quit. He then retired, and attempted a comeback but lost to Froch. He is now about to make a 2nd comeback at age 40.
