you have proven it! despite Anderson being a better striker and better at bjj than gsp, gsp is more well rounded because he is good at striking enough to use it to set up his takedowns. Gsp is good enough at bjj to submitt fighters he has worn down with top control and strikes to soften them up for submissions. theirfore he is the most well rounded. You are clearly right I am wrong Gsp is the best ever and he hasnt even lost a round in 4 years this proves that he will beat anderson silva who only has size on him.
One massive thing James is missing out is that we've never seen GSP fight at 185 so we can't comment on his abilties at that weight.
It's interesting that you say that. You know, GSP is on another level in terms of how well he coordinates all of the different tools he has to be a complete fighter. I very much think that part of the reason he outstrikes people is that he can wrestle. GSP shoots for takedowns almost INSTINCTUALLY as soon as an opponent starts to come forward with strikes. He really, probably, isn't the best wrestler in welterweight. He is just so good at mixing wrestling and striking together that, in practice, he hits almost every takedown. It doesn't help to make things clear by labeling 3 categories: Wrestling, Jujitsu, and Striking, and ranking fighters based on these three categories. Sure, it is one model for looking at what makes up an MMA fighter and it helps to define an MMA fighters skillsets. The thing about GSP is he is the most well rounded not because he ranks higher than anyone at any of those things. GSP puts the mixed in mixed martial arts. GSP ranks higher because he uses his talents in any one of those categories to synergize his effectiveness in the others. He IS a better striker because he is a good wrestler, and he is a better wrestler because he is a good striker.
I agree with what you are saying except for the part about being more well rounded i just think it makes him a master "octagon controller" perhaps the best we have ever seen. I also agree that ranking fighters in wrestling, submission, and striking and adding it up, is not a good way of proving their overall worth. but its easier to quantify well roundedness in that way.
Fair enough. It's just a matter of how you look at it. I also totally agree with you that Silva has the better striking and more successful submissions (though it seems as if the only sub he ever uses/wins with is triangles so it may not be very varied):good
a rear naked choke on dan henderson and it seemed to be the armbar that ended chael sonnen. but basically your right, Silva isnt the most varied submission practitioner.
Yes, I have proven my point that GSP is the most well rounded fighter, at least moreso then Silva or Rua. Not sure where I'm supposed to disagree. That's the point of it being Mixed Martial Arts. You blend in all the forms to be maximally efficient. GSP does this better then everyone. He is more skilled in MMA then anyone else. That was my argument from the beginning, thus making the match up between Silva and GSP, who are the most skilled MMA fighters, the most interesting match up. Now I'm not even sure you know what you're arguing against so you just made up something that I wasn't even saying. Point to me where I say, "because GSP is more well rounded and more skilled in the totality of his skill sets, he therefore beats Silva at Middleweight". Or even something close to that. I'll save you time; I didn't say it. Try reading and understanding what I'm saying and maybe we won't have this unnecessary dialogue.
Okay, if I haven't proven anything then you for sure haven't even begun to offer a decent counter argument. I've answered every single one of your points. Every one. And not only that I've shown you where your arguments are just complete non-sequiturs or simply make no sense and you even go on to suggest that I'm making arguments that I'm not even implying. You say I haven't proven anything? Okay, fine, but better to turn in a D paper (or so you would probably grade it) then to not turn in anything at all.
This is pretty much my argument. He has the most complete skill set in MMA. So, take the two most skilled guys in the sport (GSP and Anderson) and there you'd have the most interesting fight because you have the two most skilled fighting and not only that you have the two most dominant champions as well. Hype? Yup, it has it. Best match up? I can't think of a better one. (If you care about the totality of skill being on display)
you havent made a decent counter argument. if gsp has the most complete game why isnt he comforable striking with a guy like serra or hardy? are these guys top strikers no! he uses his wrestling to take away his opponents strengths but you cant see that. your blind to that fact instead you see an impressive display of striking and dont see how gsp's wrestling can hinder his opponents striking by making them hesitant to be aggressive. you dont see how gsp breaks down his opponents with his wrestling by sapping their strength and will with his top game. is that well roundedness? well it can be but not as well rounded as a fighter who is dangerous in top position or off thier back who can finish any opponent standing but can also be a threat off the ground. Anderson doesnt need top position to be dangerous he doesnt need to be in control to be a threat. he is a threat anywhere the fight goes. Is gsp? only if he is in control of the circumstances. Gsp put on a striking display with koschek only using a jab because kosckeck has very poor standup ability. Gsp can gnp bj penn because thats one of penns weaknesses. Anderson can fight people at their strenghts, Rua can fight others at their strengths but gsp needs to control his opponent with wrestling but so far their is no one he cant control. I doubt he will be able to control silva for 5 rounds and survive the standup in between. Thats why I favor a fight between rua and silva it will be more exciting with both fighters dangerous in any position.
There is so much ass backwardness in this post I hardly know where to begin, so I'll do it when I'm not strugging to keep my eyelids up. Just...no.
We're back to skill sets verse application of same. I will grant you GSP has a superior skill set, but back to my issue of power. If GSP has to throw 9-10 punches to hurt someone and someone like Anderson can accomplish that with 1-2 punches then it doesn't much matter if GSP is technically better at throwing a straight right, or a left hook. They simply aren't as effective as Anderson's punches. And the level of power in strikes matters a great deal in both boxing and MMA. So the reason I don't think the fight between Silva and GSP would be as interesting as the fight between Anderson and Rua isn't related to who has the best technical skills between Rua and GSP, rather it's who has the best change of hurting and/or submitting Silva between the two. And on that basis, I pick Rua.
