Hearns fought better against taller guys than shorter guys at times. I think his right hand would be landing clean and he would stop SRR. Hard for people to see, but Hearns right was better than anything Robinson ever saw.
I'd give tommy Hearns a chance against any welterweight throughout history, except SRR. Tommy's boxing skills were very underrated, but he would be drawn into a war with Robinson who had awesome power. Tommy, as we know, didn't have the greatest chin ever, whereas Sugar had a great beard on him. Robinson knocks him out in four in a similar fight to Haglar - Hearns
Ray had a great chin and was pretty durable. I give Tommy Hearns a chance against anyone but Ray is not considered the greatest fighter ever for nothing.
It might go the distance and even be controversial one way or the other in a decision on an off night for SRR, Tommy was amazing. HOWEVER, best for best at the weight, I can't see it going the distance. SRR would stop him. Tommy would have to be able to inflict heat stroke to stop SRR.
Whats the difference if people knew about his chin ?... you are asking us - with all the knowledge we have now - who would win, are you not ? :huh Anyway... Robinson by stoppage, this would be a war & I see Tommy outboxing SRR for large parts of the bout similar to what he did to Leonard but as much as Tommy has an underrated chin (IMO), I dont think it can take a peak Robinson`s best for 15 rds. Robinson hit harder than Leonard with both hands & if SRL could put Tommy away within the limit then I`d favour the original to replicate that great feat... I wouldnt be suprised to see Ray on the canvas, probably on a flash early KD but once both got right into battle mode I`d fancy SRR to take Tommy out.
Just as well no-one held a gun to your fkn head in 1981 when Leonard stopped Hearns then was it not ?
