Cassius Clay/Muhammed Ali exile years

Muhammad Ali could have left the United States, but where could he go, as there
was no other platform to argue his case.

The honest truth, no other country really wanted him.
Even his home state of Kentucky would not issue him a license, the last
state to hold out, before revoking his license.

But don't despair, he was doing just fine on the talk show circuit and speaking engagements at Colleges and Black Muslim gatherings.

$4000 per gig, and chauffered around in a limousine.
Not bad work if you can get it.......

December 1968,

"CHAMPBURGER OPENS'

Addressing the crowd at the opening of 'Champburger' in Miami, Florida, dethroned
Heavyweight Champion tells crowd he entered into the business because it offers
a real opportunity for black people to share in, and own their own businesses in their
own neighborhoods.
A gathering of 1200 locals were there for the 'grand opening'.
The featured special on the menu 'The Champburger' and 'The Greatest' a milk shake.

Muhammad Ali envisions several 'Champburger' restaraunts to open up in the
Miami Beach area. Mr. Ali stated, 'we are looking for investors in other locations, as
this will be the greatest deal of the century for anyone interested.'

 

He got off lightly though, really.
I mean, as grown men we all know that serious consequences follow when you **** with the government.

Ali's penalties were relatively light. He stayed out of prison, and was lucky to be a celebrity who could earn from personal appearances etc.
Let's not pretend he suffered terrible hardship.
He SAID he was prepared to face a firing squad for his beliefs, so he certainly came out on top.

People need to get a sense of perspective about Ali.

His hardships during his exile were completely over-blown.
He was living the 'good-life'.
He was not thrown out in the streets, like many think.
He could do anything he wanted, except box in the ring for the Title.
