Mayo defeated Six Head Lewis, then beat undefeated at the time considered pound for pound king vernon Forrest to claim the undisputed welter weight championship of the world, defended against forrest and beat him, lost a decision against spinks ( some say he won ) , lost but put on a show against tito. Won the WBC 154 crown agains piccirillo, got blown away by de la hoya, won against Vargas, put up a really good fight against Mosley. So, if he beats Cotto, he will have defeated Six Head Lewis, Forrest, Piccirillo, Vargas and Cotto. He would be a 2 division Champ and a 2 time Light Middle Weight Champ . If he beats Cotto, he has my vote.. what do you think?
Are you insane? I'm starting to get the feeling ESB thinks of Mayorga more than just a wild swining bum with his only real calm fame being the Forrest win.
I actually read the title wrong while skimming the forum and my misreading actually raises a more interesting question... It was "If Mayorga beats Cotto, HOF banned? (Cotto, that is)" IE, Cotto would then be 3-3 since his undefeated glory days and have gained a reputation for losing any time he faced someone a) tough/strong, b) busy and c) aggressive. The question then becomes, are his accomplishments at 140 and 147 enough to get him into the HOF despite having come up short later on in some of his biggest moments and proving to have such a powerful Kryptonite? (the aforementioned ABC combo, which also troubled him for long spells against a declining Mosley). If we take a snapshot of Cotto's career two months from now - assuming a loss to Mayorga for the sake of argument here, and further assuming that Foreman was his last big win - there are less worthy fighters enshrined, yes - but there are also probably worthier ones who aren't. :think
Why insane? We are trying to talk facts.. 2 division champ, 2 time light middle weight and with lewis, forrest 2x, vargas and cotto on his resume, plus having rumbled with pretty much everyone.. whether he is a wild swinging man is not in question..
i think you have a point as well.. cotto is a 2 division champ and if he loses to Mayorga, his resume would be similar to mayorgas ( compare names.. )
:good People aren't going to like hearing that, as Cotto is so beloved (hell, I love the guy myself) but it is what it is... There isn't quite as much between them as we'd all like to think...and that is coming from a big admirer of Cotto's LWW/early WW run.
No it wouldnt, Mayorga has a couple of really good wins on his record but it cant compare to the number of high quality fighters Cotto has beaten at light-welterweight and Welterweight, regardless of whether he beats Cotto or not.
Considering that Joe Cortez and Sylvester Stallone are both getting into it, I wouldn't have any problem with Mayorga getting in. Even if you don't think he deserves to get in for his boxing, no one can deny his trash talking is legendary, second only to Ali.
People tend to say mayorga is a bum because of his style ( granted he is not a boxer boxer per say ) but he has only been defeated at the highest level.... tito, dlh, mosley...
Granted, we have to take into consideration that being in the olympics for prico gave cotto more visibility and more access to better fighters than mayorga earlier on ( who probably was selling empanadas at the time ) but mayorgas cheer resume after lewis is impressive ( lewis, forrest 2x, spinks, piccirillo, ODLH, Vargas, Mosley & Cotto in March ) he is 5- 3 against them counting the 2 victories against forrest..
Exactly my point. He only beat Forrest. He just happened to have Forrest's number so why the hell will he be HOF?
He beat Lewis, Forrest 2x, lost against Spinks in a controversial manner, beat Vargas and if he beats Cotto, it could "validate" his case as HOF... I think Cotto could be the missing piece to tell people like yourself when they ask, " well who else besides forrest he beat?" R/ Well he beat Cotto.. If he doesnt beat Cotto i dont think he has a chance to be in the HOF..
