Pavlik does not fight as fast as Calzaghe. And even then, Hopkins said on British TV that it's much harder to fight someone like Calzaghe than it was to fight Roy Jones, because even if both were fast, Calzaghe punched more along with the speed, making it hard for him to fight back. When Hopkins opens up against that, he will get hit considerably more. And then he would really lose after. Hopkins cannot be as offensive as he was against Pavlik versus Calzaghe because Pavlik is not a counterpuncher. Calzaghe is natural counterpuncher.
Kessler said he couldn't deal with Calzaghe throwing shots at him 20 times in a row AFTER the fight. Post fight interviews will give that to you. Hopkins, from the interview before Calzaghe vs RJJ when asked by a British reporter about which fight was harder, RJJ or Calzaghe. He said Calzaghe is more difficult to deal with (yet oddly, he picked RJJ to beat Cal). Froch GOT BEATEN by a DAMAGED KESSLER. He had a close decision with Pascal, who got a beaten up by a MUCH OLDER HOPKINS. A guy Calzaghe DECISIVELY beat. There is no reason for Calzaghe to be afraid of Froch. All those guys you called Calzaghe got into ***** street, no. Calzaghe rose quickly and beat the brakes out of both Mitchell and Salem, and Hopkins KD was a flash KD. The only one who really rattled Calzaghe was RJJ, and that was when he's already 37 years old, beyond his physical prime. Froch's jab has never been that good. And even then, everyone before said Kessler's jab was amazing and Calzaghe would never get past it. Guess what happened. EDIT: Anyone who says Calzaghe has no ring smarts completely voids their own arguments. He adjusted against Kessler, and out-adjusted Hopkins in a dirty fight Hopkins excels in.
Sakio Bika made Ward look just as bad, and Sakio Bika is much older now that when he fought Calzaghe. Bika makes fighters look bad. Calzaghe is fast when he wants to be. But he gets dragged in wars because the man has pride. Froch's jab isn't better than Kessler's pre-Calzaghe, the aggression is something Calzaghe loves because he's a natural counterpuncher, drive is worth nothing as Lacy and Kessler (who showed it against Froch too) showed by making it to round 12 while trying to find ways to punch Calzaghe, and power only matters if it hits. And even if it hits, Calzaghe has an iron chin and high recuperative powers. It's like you never watched Calzaghe before. To add, long arms become even more useless during infighting, especially when the opponent has crazy handspeed. Calzaghe has many styles and can take your jab and everything away from you. Froch is a tough man, but don't make him out to be the second coming of SRL.
Like when he was interviewed on Steve Bunce's Boxing Hour just after beating Pascal? Froch said here that WAS NOT willing to fight Calzaghe at 175 because "he looked big at the weight."
I agree with this. Although I also agree that JC was not hard to hit from a defensive standpoint. It was his offense that kept him from getting hit more.
