...the Fedor of a few years ago would've brutalized Bigfoot. But at his age and with the wars and the damage he has suffered throughout his career, he isn't going to roll over superheavyweights the size of Bigfoot and Overeem now (apparently Silva was 285lbs by fight time?). Considering all that Fedor has done for the sport, I don't think anyone really wants to see him get KTFO, like Big Nog did against Mir & Velasquez, and Crocop did against Mir. It's time to retire, and enjoy his legacy as the greatest MMA fighter of all-time. :happy PS: Congratulations to Bigfoot, he was excellent on the night, great performance.
Mate the world has moved on from this semi pro type of athletes. The new generation of fighters are always going to be better.
:rofl Big Nog, Fedor and Cro Cop, the World-famous 'semi pros' :rofl Popkins mate, we've made a similar thread. Looks like you just beat me to it, my apologies :good
It seems appropriate that the contribution of "the beaver" has indeed been the expected output from a hairy fanny, ie: pish.
I would love to see him fight simply because he's like an idol to me, but truth is he should probably retire as I highly doubt he'll start fighting at 205.
Very interested in hearing why you thing the old guard like Fedor would be regarded as a “semi-pro”. Fedor actually started in combat sport at an early age going from top line Judo, and top line Sambo and into MMA. Some guys nowdays have been plucked from obscurity in terms of previous combat sports experience i.e. Brock Lesnar. Some have even been plucked from reality shows. Fedor when he started he already had the full arsenal at his disposal, with top striking and submission game as well as the cardio to last the whole fight. Some of these so called “elite new breeds” look more amateurish than Fedor when he started. In my opinion it was very amateurish of Carwin to gas out in the first 4 minutes of round 1 (in a 5 round fight) and was very amateurish of Brock to run away from punches. Mental strength is also something that sets professionals from amateurs, even loosing we all saw the mental strength Fedor had after being peppered with those treasure chest sized hands of Bigfoot. Finally many of the fighters still relevant today were there in the old days, the only difference is that they started off later. The main difference between Fedor and someone like Werdum or Overeem is really age. Age catches up with every fighter, it happened in the past, its happening to Fedor and will happen to these “new breeds”.
He took the easier road for too many years .He hasn't had to deal with a BJJ black belt since NOG and Werdum is not a small guy anf of course Silva is a giant. He's not getting any younger and actually looks very old now. I think he and M1 spent more energy in negotiations then in the ring.
i agree, its like he could see the openings but couldn't get his fist there in time. i had a friend over that never watches MMA and after the fight i showed him a fedor HL video on Youtube and he said "he didn't look that fast tonight".....
The direction MMA is going, is very natural and evolutionary. It's not going to be uncommon to see guys who are closer to natural 265 weight classes, or even have to cut significantly to make that weight, on top of carrying great pedigrees in wrestling, BJJ and striking. The heavyweight division is becoming more and more refined, fighters are naturally going to take advantage of everything they can. Fedor never sought to take advantage of size or weight. Rather his focus was on endurance and skillset. This is all find and dandy if he were closer to a natural 260'ish, but he's more around 230 without ever even worrying about cutting. This ends up leading to a significant disadvantage. In the future, the heavies that are going to make it far will be those who have the combination of skill and are right around that 260+ lb threshold. This abandons a lot of great fighters that would normally fight between say 220-230 lbs. Just such a significant disadvantage. What's funny is, for a long time Fedor stood for the exception. But, that exception just went away.
This so called evolution of MMA sickens me, this is pretty much the same garbage that happened in days gone by. People relied on weight over skill and experience, what you get is something like Brock and Carwin and Mir. Prior to Fedor it was Igor battling against giants. I can assure you that this cycle will begin again when another dominant small guy steps up who can use his speed, timing, skill and experience. Put it this way in the HW division the most dominant in the history of MMA has ALWAYS been the smaller guys. This is even happening in boxing where you get someone like PacMan who uses his skills, experience, speed, endurance and precision instead of relying on brute strength and size. The reason why GIANTS aren’t dominating the sport of MMA and Boxing is because its far easier to eventually counter and learn how to fight against these giants.
fedor just ran into top competition finally. its absured to think he is too old when couture started at 34 and bock lesnar at 31. his fans just use hes to old card its past him. No his body and relexes havent let him down his fear of fighting top competition has ruined him. he fought has beens and nobody's so long he cant just jump right back to the top. I'd bet todays couture would take him down and put him away his submission skills and stand up has just been used to fighting low level competition.
