as a pro would,and that is what makes the actors plausible IMO...

 

Why for once can't we post a thread without bringing race into it ? We did have THE GREAT WHITE HOPE, about Jack Johnson, several years ago. Why not
concentrate on boxing issues,without inflaming remarks,for awhile.?

 

i've no intention of watching it.i reckon it would look like such non-epics as rocky or the champ.

Addendum-N, if you researched ,there was a picture extolling the life of
Joe Louis, starring Coley Wallace,as Louis. There is nothing RACIAL about Hollywood, it is all about the COLOR GREEN, money !!!

 

Just saw the film, thought it was very good.

Christian Bale deserves an Oscar for his portrayal of Dick Eklund.

 

Wahlberg's probably been punched a bit. Wasn't he a juvenile delinquent or something.
Not all fighters have busted faces. Admittedly Micky Ward does, but he looked less so in the early 90s.
It's actually a good film.

 

One of the better films about boxing that I've seen and a fairly good film overall I suppose. It ain't no Fat City though.... :verysad

I've got a feeling that they might unfairly snub Bale at the Oscars much as they did Russell Crowe in retaliation to his personal life. It's not they haven't blanked Bale before: he wasn't even nominated for The Machinist, Rescue Dawn, American Psycho, Harsh Times etc. He was outstanding here once again though. Nailing the subtleties and microlanguage of acting hasn't always been his strong point despite the mastery of accents and the dedicated aura of intensity, but he managed it here better than ever. Top actor.

He's not better than Daniel Day-Lewis though. :bart

 

You're right B. Wasn't thinking about enmflaming any race issues with anyone but Hollywood.

And I didn't know about the Jack Johnson movie. I'll check it out.

Ok. Haven't heard of that one either. But wouldn't you agree that race does play a role in how much money can be generated? It isn't as if this is a new idea.

 

I've thought that before, although there are a few movies out there (Rubin Carter - The Hurricane). The thing is, Whalberg was passionate about the project and he's white, Irish, and wanted to do it. You can't blame that aspect of it... and while there is Cinderella Man I've always thought a great movie could've been made for the black Cinderella Man (Jersey Joe Walcott). Still... Actors and Hollywood are predominately white. I'm sure the white to black ratio in boxing movies is more proportionate than it appears. As others mentioned they have been a few movies (Ali, Carter, Johnson). That's why you have a comedy like The Great White Hope.
