Yeah, the actual result was a tech. decision and not a dq, but just the same he was one of those "passive champions" who didn't do a thing offensively to warrant being crowned champ....even if Honeyghan 's performance was subpar.

luis santana no question...wins and defend a title by DQ...hell he shouldn't have received a shot in the first place..he didn't beat nobody prior those fights with terry norris

 

Any fighter that beats the previous champion is worthy in my eyes.

 

Really? Granted, Eddie had slipped horribly by the time Hearns starched him, but I saw the footage of Gazo taking out Wajima, and 1977 was too good a banner year for him (4-0-0 in title fights, with two successful defenses in Tokyo and one in Seoul) for him to be properly included in this thread. (He also lost that title in August 1978 to Masashi Kudo on a split decision in Japan.)

I have a hard time considering anybody for this thread who was able to win multiple title fights. (Even Art Frias managed a clean knockout of Claude Noel, and a successful defense against a shot and moribund former champion Espana prior to dropping his WBA LW Title to Mancini.)

He deserved to be champ in the second fight. Norris hit him what 3-4 seconds clearly after the bell. Thats worthy of a dq surely

 

I was thinking Elisha Obed. I have never been able to see his two title wins- would love to see the Tony Gardner fight- but he looks dreadful in every other fight I've ever seen him in to the point where I question whether he's really even a true 10 round fighter.

 

oh most assuredly its a dq but was that fight close? hell nah..norris beat the **** out of him in all 3 fights

Awww...Heeeey, mannnn. I think he deserves a championship, a medal and a sainthood for dealing with Stoney. Quietly...Beardedly...Clutchily...Stoically...In short...heroically.

 

I was actually fascinated with how adroitly he kept snaking his arms under those of Czyz en route to getting DQed for holding. One thing that was apparent to me was that he did have 100 fights over nearly a decade and a half worth of experience, and was trying to use it to last the distance with Bobby in lazy fashion. (Incredibly, the referee who disqualified Obed for holding against Czyz was Tony Perez! That's right, he who said after Ali-Frazier II that since Muhammad wasn't hitting while holding that he wasn't committing fouls. Obed wasn't hitting while holding either.:grouphug) Reports were that Elisha was far better during the early and mid 1970s, and he won his title via stoppage in 11 rounds, as well as Gardner in two.

 

Billy Backus was certainly lucky.
