Why do referees press a fighter to continue after an illegal blow?

The rules state that if a low blow occurs, the fighter gets five minutes to recover, which I think is fair. However, in the majority of cases where an illegal blow has taken place. the referee will press the fighter to continue well before the five minutes are up. I like him as a ref but Mercante Jr. in the Cotto/Judah fight was constantly saying things like "suck it up like a champion" and whatever. Same as ith Golota/Bowe. It's wrong. The fighter gets five minutes because they need five minutes. The referee shouldn't be questioning their heart or pride.

cause they don't want the crowd to get bored and restless

Yeah that's right. When Judah got hit below the belt against Cotto, it was obvious the 2nd one was a real shot, and I remember exactly when Mercante was telling him to suck it up and come on. I remember he was saying the same thing to Foreman during his fight with Cotto as well. I wonder if any of these refs ever used to fight.

Their job is to ensure the fans get a good fight but they have to protect the rules too. Fans would also prefer headbutts, low blows etc., to be allowed, I'm sure, and to have a proper fight. It doesn't mean the referees should allow it.

When a guy gets floored off an illegal low blow, he has every right to take five minutes and the referee should encourage him to take his time. **** the fans, if they are restless. Although I've very rarely seen the atmosphere suffer because of an illegal blow.

I'm just answering your question bro. They press the fighters to continue so that the crowd doesn't get bored. it's almost instinctive

maybe the boxer should punch the ref in the nuts and taunt him to do the same: walk it off now, suck it up. i agree, the referee should let the fighter resume at his own accord within the allowed time.

They are trying to go home as early as possible

kidding.......I do think that the fighter should take their time though if it takes 30 secs or 5 minutes

The refs are also boxing fans themselves!
