Alfonso Gomez is not very strong, not very quick and isn't a powerful puncher. But he's got great combinations, isn't easy to hit but has a good chin when he does get hit. I like watching him fight as he's got some very useful moves. Gerry Penalosa was like a polar opposite to a young Manny Pacquiao. Not very strong, not very quick and not a destroyer like Manny but has beautiful ring skills. Who else is in this category?
Juan Diaz isnt the most athletic guy but he is quick and throws nice combos, pity they have no pop in them
nonito donaire does'nt seem to possess an athletic body but has great skills, speed and power. compare his body with the berto, bradley, of course pac
Julio Cesar Chavez doesn't strike me as the most fast or graceful athlete. But he definitely knew how to fight.
Good call on Monzon. I'll have to watch the Harold Johnson vid some time. Juan Diaz has great stamina and seems to get leverage with his punches but yeah, he's cursed in the power dept. But I wouldn't say his skills are on par with any of the above. Nonito has blazing handspeed, speed and agility. He's athletic but doesn't have the muscularity. JCC had good handspeed and was strong as a bull at 135. Not incredibly athletic but still above par.
Regarding Diaz's lack of power, for a lot of punches, he merely throws at the target, rather than through it. He doesn't turn it over or have that snap to the punches. I don't know if it's usually by design or poor technique though.
Chris John is the prototype for that. Watch the highlights of his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez. He had a prime JMM lunging like a novice.
Today: Dmitry Pirog When I watch this guy, I just wish to myself he had the speed and athleticism of someone like his opponent Jacobs. He has great defensive skills, timing, footwork, good timing of course, puts his punches together great, but he's not an athlete. He looks akward in the ring, which is a good thing at times, but not overall. Then again, I kind of think the reason his skills are so sharp is because he had to perfect them to get to where he is. Quite possibly if he were fast and athletic, he'd not bother learning to throw a proper jab or position his feet to counter when he moves his head. BUT, an athletic Pirog with his skillset would dominate the divion IMHO.
Anyone who attempts to make a "highlight" video of that fight mysteriously disappears immediately after.
