Ali-Spinks II. Granted, Muhammad was shot in their first bout, but Leon was also a ball of fire. In their rematch though, Leon's head wasn't in it, and an obviously misfiring Ali was able to ponderously dance his way to a lopsided decision win. Leon, at his rarely seen freaky-deaky, herky-jerky best, was an exciting fighter, but he needed to be focused and free of the parasites which leeched onto him following his ascension to the throne. I'm not convinced Muhammad wins New Orleans over the Neon Leon of Spinks-Ali I, not the way he was misfiring in that final victory. But the Spinks of Ali I versus the well conditioned Ali of Spinks II could have been Muhammad's most exciting bout since Manila. (I've long suspected that neurological damage Shavers inflicted on Ali was responsible in part for permanently compromising Muhammad's reflexes, hand-eye coordination, and long term physical impairments.)
Laciar vs Zapata benvenuti vs Rodriguez Roman vs Watanabe Tito vs DLH Mayweather in almost all of his hyped fights since Castillo 1
The Ali of Spinks 2 would still have beaten the Spinks of fight number one. Would have been closer than the New Orleans bout though.
Even after Duran-Barkley, SRL-Duran III was about what I expected, and I didn't bother watching it live. Duran had to be able to engage Ray in order to win, and while he did a masterful job of it in Montreal, there was no way SRL was going to engage a much slower, heavier and older El Cholo in their long delayed rubber match. I didn't think this one was ever going to be more than it was. Roberto couldn't catch Ray, and SRL couldn't hurt him.
I can buy that. But Ali-Spinks II was very heavily hyped, in fact the most hyped bout ever on live free television (at least up to that time), and there was no way it was going to measure up if Leon didn't bring it a second time like he did the first. Muhammad could be an exciting personality, but rarely an exciting fighter. He needed opposition like Frazier or Foreman to create riveting action, and he even dampened down Smoke in their middle bout. Leon may have raised hell in their rematch though if he'd torn after Muhammad with another balls to the wall go for broke effort.
