I just don't know. Frazier jacked off a whole lot after getting smoked by Foreman the second time in 1976. It seems like Frazier had several chances to fight before 1980, but he never did for one reason / excuse or another. Finally, in late '81, Frazier fights / struggles with Jumbo Cummings to a 10 rd. draw and never fights again...

Point is, after 1975 Manila, Frazier had nothing left in the tank...

    MR. B,,,,,,,

I think you hit the nail on the 'proverbial head'.

Joe was shot, and was using the press to try to promote 'invisible fights'.

Kallie Knoetzee would have bopped 'Smokin Joe' in 4 rounds, tops.
    His chin was shot.

A fight with Shavers in '78 as proposed would've been awfully sad, it wouldn't last one round.

I think the votes are in,,,,,,,,,,,Earnie over 'Smokin Joe' in 1978.
    Though I'll say 3-Rounds.

Joe wins every fight up thru 1975.
    Earnie takes over in 1976.

Joe frazier had been a great champion but once he reached superstar status he was only chasing mega money in superfights as a part time fighter. I think he paid his dues as a champ but like a lot of older fighters with a name that can sell its hard to walk away when they can leapfrog genuine contenders into money fights. It never works out. Making a name is the hard thing, ex champs know their name is a short cut.

Did report that 'Smokin Joe' had been in his Philadelphia gym in since November 1977, and was down to 208 lbs. in early-1978.

Joe, had also been sparring with Leon Spinks, and had looked real good in those sessions.

In 1978, he was looking for an April bout with Gerrie Coetzee, or a May bout with Kallie Knoetzee, in South Africa.

A $1,000,000 fight purse was on the table versus Knoetzee.

'Smokin Joe' was helping Leon Spinks prep for his bout with
    Muhammad Ali {February 1978}.

Smokin Joe was working with Leon at Don Kings training facility in
Cleveland, Ohio in December 77'/January 78'.

Gym reports, were that Joe was looking real good, and had got
down to 208 lbs., where he was much quicker.

The sparring-sessions with Leon, were pretty much equal, which
gave Joe the thought that just maybe he could come back.

Right after Leon Spinks won the title, Smokin Joe was looking
to get back into the WBA ratings, with hopes of a title shot.

Though a bout with Knoetzee may have been a reach, a bout in
South Africa was still on his mind..........$$$$$$$.
