and Montiel and Donaire's purses combined are only half of what Berto is getting.

I don't understand, sure these are small guys, but Donaire could definitely sell more tickets in America than Berto. And Montiel has the Hispanic crowd to tap. Not to mention, both these guys are overflowing with potential and could someday be future greats. Both have concussive power and would make for exciting fights that could sell PPV and venue tickets. Dzinziruk's purse is part of what Gary Shaw was guaranteed by HBO during the Bradley-Alexander negotiations. Berto's is because of the Haymon connection.

boxing politics is :-(. HBO was lucky because Showtime was doing their own Bantamweight tournament thus they were unable to air this fight. So Arum offered it to HBO and HBO offered them pennies on a take it or leave it basis (HBO was said to be wary of getting Montiel to headline an HBO bout because they think he is a boring fighter based on his Johnny Gonzales (2006?) and Mark Johnson (2003) bouts (montiel's only losses and they were years ago. :verysad

It's all in the art of the negotiation. That, and the fact that HBO don't have a ****ing clue any longer in their boxing dept.

    Kerry Davis needs to go.

and it doesn't help that Montiel was promoted by Zanfir Promotions. Zanfir did a great job in keeping Montiel active, they matched him up well but they could only do as much as bringing Montiel on a world tour to fight in his opponent's backyard (z gorres in the philippines, hasegawa in japan, etc). Montiel couldn't headline an HBO bout in five years while he was with Zanfir.

meanwhile, Donaire is promoted by Top Rank and we all Know HBO wants to drive this old man out of business and if they could, they would herd all TR fighters to Haymon (Promotions) or GBP.

I don't think negotiating for more could have helped Montiel and Donaire. Arum couldn't do so with Cotto. HBO would only bow down to Pacquiao and Arum did the right thing by transferring him to Showtime. In that way, HBO knew that Top Rank meant business and without that outfit, GBP and Haymon would run HBO's boxing program to the ground.

if HBO was only offering pennies, why would Arum take it then? He produces his own PPV all the time. So that doesn't make any sense. If Arum isn't getting his perceived value, he goes his own route.
It is a great fight but historically bantam and below don't bring in ratings.

Middleweight is a premiere division and the championship always brings added value.

That said, HBO has made many, many blunders over the past few years and Berto is the greatest example. But i don't think he belongs in this conversation.

Well to be fair, Montiel had two horrible outings on HBO. That's why HBO didn't air his fights.

We don't know yet because Showtime has a contractual obligation to its Bantamweight tourney. But if the fights turns out to be fantastic, they'd be forced to come up with a way to integrate montiel and donaire in the tournament. Arum could still offer them to HBO in future bouts but he'd have better bargaining leverage this time

Arum thinks he found a gold mine in Donaire and he has to give him as much exposure as possible in order to build him a fan base. Top Rank's PPV programs are limited in extent and more geared towards Latinos. He needs a broader platform to market Donaire

Im not 100% up to speed with EXACTLY what has happened with the Arum / HBO issue , i was of the thinking that Arum has pulled the plug on HBO with every single fighter he has ???

Im very suprised HBO didnt put some conditions on this fight , i.e. the rights to the re match etc , as clearly its a great fight !!!!

HBO took away Cotto's PPV date and that really pissed old man Arum off. It's not a great fight for Cotto but still he has been pretty solid for HBO. Now Showtime/CBS is rolling out the red carpet for Arum and he's moving Pac to CBS, even if temporarily. HBO have ****ed themselves, cuz they got nothing now.

So essenially im assuming that Cotto and Pacquiao are not fighting for HBO again under the TR banner ??? , where does this leave the rest of his stable , is he still open to air the rest of the TR fighters on HBO once current contracts expire , i.e. fighters scheduled to fight on HBO before they took Cotto's date away from him ???

But HBO should have paid attention, after his loss to Gonzales, he came back and knocked all his opponents out except for Z Gorres (and i think Gorres was robbed in that fight in his own hometown lol). His Melendez fight was the ****, if HBO people were watching that one, they would have knocked on his door right away and begged him to come back.

besides, HBO nurtured and fattened the pockets of too many limp-wristed boring-ass fighters, its not like Montiel's (and his purse is nothing compared to Chad dawson's purse) performance with gonzales would stand out.
