Porter is no Calzaghe and he never will be. He struggles with tons of so-so fighters, IB is completely on the money about his poor accuracy and open style. I think he's a brutal KO in the making personally. LOL at darryl playing that race card like Gambit, as always. Get out of here with that ****.
Shawn Porter is rated #43 on Boxrec behind Ashley Theophane, Delvin Rodriguez and the guy Berto just KO'd Freddy Hernandez...But you guys think he is overrated...REALLY? The WBO and WBC have him in the Top 15...but listening to WBC/WBO is like listening to FoxNews. Look, I am not expecting everyone to jump on the bandwagon, but to act as if he has NO TALENT is just ridculous. Everyone of you say you hate Mayweather's antics/behavior/persona and all the other bull**** he does. But Porter is totally opposite...not a bragger, or **** talker, doesn't have a criminal record doesn't beat women....and ya'll still HATIN'!!! He has 17 Pro Fights full of fighters that other fighters have fought/beaten in their career, yet they all have fought them later in their careers. But Porter is supposed to fight The X-Men, Jesus Christ, King Kong and Conan the Barbarian in his first 10 fights to satify the HATERZ....REALLY?
No one is saying he's **** or just a bum. But he is severely limited and when he steps up in comp, his limitations will be exposed. He has almost no regard to defense. He's only thinking offense, offense, offense. That leaves him wide open for counters. And his accuracy is terrible as some mentioned, ala Andre Berto. And he doesn't have much pop. His chin hasn't been tested. So he's got a lot of questions. Some are warranted and some we need to wait and see like his chin and perhaps power. But no way is he going to be an elite fighter unless if he magically polishes his game up a few notches.
Did you watch his fight against Russell Jordan who Martinez KTFO easy? This kid isn't going anywhere.
What does that have to do with anything? Martinez was a 10 year pro when he beat Jordan, Porter was a second year pro. The kid is 23, still very green and they are moving him slow but steady. They are moving him the way he should be moved. You will see him break the top 10 by next year and see his competition level get tougher. The kid only has 50-60 professional rounds under his belt. It makes me sick when all these peeps on here say this guy or that guy like Porter or Lemieux need to step up, when they are being brought along perfectly fine. Some Amateur stars get brought along quickly in the pro's, because they are usually already well into their 20's and have vast experience already. Porter and many others need a more flat and linear progression as they simply took a different route.
this saturday morning (thats when we get the espn friday night fights) here in the uk will be my first and many uk fans chance to have a look at porter. hes highly rated especially by steve farhood who wrote an article in teh boxing monthly magazine where he lists the best american prospects. also porter was on the boxingtruth radio at the weekend where he sounded really down to earth and knows hes work in progress and needs to be patient
I'm undecided on Porter at the moment. There is some talent and a big amtuer career to like but he can be sloppy at times and can get hit too easily. I want to like Porter but I think we need to see more of him when he starts facing a higher class of fighter to see where he really is. I think his class of opposition has been fine so far. Guys like Munoz, Pinzon, and now Adjaho are all solid opponents for a guy going into his 18th fight. They have all been, style wise, made for Porter but they're still good opponents for Porter at this point. Moving to welterweight was a good move and he needs to stay there because his size will hurt him at the higher weights. Hopefully, later this year or early next year Porter steps it up another level and faces someone with a more challenging style for him so we see what he has.
I've seen maybe a half dozen (if not more) of Porter's professional fights and have yet to be impressed. He seems to have some natural ability with decent speed and power, but technically, he is terrible. It's astonishing to me that someone so fundamentally flawed could have enjoyed such a successful amateur career.
Not to mention win a Regional title along the way. Too bad the contenders aren't snatching those titles up while they are waiting for World title shots.
You guys were right. He didn't have much power. He's going to have to fix that if he wants to compete at the elite level.
