Cotto was a bully against weaker/smaller competition, but when he stepped up and fought better/bigger guys he became a runner.

I admit, he's a good fighter. But I think the question should NOT be "why the hate?" and should be "why so much love for the guy?"

He doesnt have a flamboyant personality so what...at least he's not running his mouth talking about somebody's dead parents and making a mockery of the sport....you ask why so much love???If you were puertorican you would understand that is all about the pride thats just how our people are,every time he steps in the ring he is representing PR and we will support him despite his personality flaws...on a side note dont you think its a little hard being the next best thing coming out of PR after Tito casted such a huge shadow,,,and who are all these smaller competitors you are talking about, cotto is not even a big welterweight and is def a small light middleweight.

Two things turned me off about Cotto:

1. How friggin cocky he was when fighting Alfonso Gomez. Raising his right hand in the air after hitting him with it? That **** is just disrespectful and cocky.

2. His complete disregard for his fans and the media. Dude, smile once in a while....wtf!

 

I know exactly what you are saying and id be lying if i said its all love for Cotto in PR...i know plenty of ricans who cant stand his ass...but look at what happened after the Gomez fight and everything else that followed

 

Not the biggest Cotto fan, but I like and respect him. Some in this thread are just making assumptions about the guy's personality. Far more boxers have been more "arrogant" or "boring".. Not to mention being disrespectful at the same time.

I think Cotto somewhat struggles and the fight goes the distance.. Hopefully Mayorga can last that long. Looking beyond this fight, I don't see Cotto beating any of the top fighters or belt holders around him. Saul Alvarez will beat him by the time that fight comes around, Berto beats him tomorrow, and Paul Williams could still probably box his way to a decision.

Cotto's punch resistence is shot.. This has and will be his downfall at the top level. He only won that slugfest at 140 (Torres I believe?) because the guy was limited in skill. Fighting the top 5 in and around his division, Cotto will lose.

 

Cotto not smiling is a GOOD thing.
