Bunce defends anyone who he talks to, especially when they're on his Show.

Why do they defend him? Because he is the BRITISH WBA Heavyweight champion of the world. It's as simple as that. The media will get behind him because the general British public find pride that we have a HW champ. It sells. If journos make the others out to be the bad guys, they can milk Haye for everything he is worth. If his next fight is a joke/one sided beatdown, it only happened as 'the others (ie the Klits) ducked him'.

It's all about money. Like it or not, to the general public he is a national hero. And that **** sells.

Haye the national hero sells product. Haye the deeply flawed man doesn't.

And as Vano-Irons also says...it comes down to national pride. In David Haye's case, as Samuel Johnson wrote, "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel." Many British fight fans defend David Haye just because he is a Brit. If he was a Yank, or a Ukrainian or whatever they would tear him to pieces.

As for the boxing media they are a marginalised bunch in a minority sport who are scared to speak out because they feel the need to turn any British boxing star into a big hero to sell product and protect their livelihoods. They are putting base financial motives above the truth. It ain't exactly pretty. It ain't exactly good journalism.

The average person hasn't turned their back on Haye because they don't follow things closely enough to see the truth. However, the hardcore fans here on ESB, even on the British forum, have largely turned their backs on Haye.

The specialist boxing press is maybe a little out of step with hardcore boxing fans but then their best sales come from the wider audience that a big fight like Haye-Harrison attracts. Hardcore boxing fans probably won't desert the boxing press if they big up David Haye but the media outlets fear that casuals might be turned off if they criticise Haye.

When I talk to non-boxing fans they are always surprised by what I have to say about David Haye but they usually start to see why I don't like what Haye's been doing when they hear my reasoning.

If Haye keeps doing what he's doing and hardcore boxing fans keep spreading the message, it won't be long before Haye's popularity collapses. Look at Sports Personality of the Year. Haye came last of the 10 nominees in the vote, and half of the nominees I had scarcely even heard of before!

Of course, once David does sign to fight a Klitschko most British fans will forget his past indiscretions and get behind him. Personally I will be backing the brothers. They are hardly perfect guys either but they seem much nicer people than David.

Interestingly I did a poll on the BRITISH forum in November asking who would you WANT to win between Haye and the brothers. 36% of ESB British fans were supporting the brothers then and it's growing...
