I feel quite confident in stating that Eddie Futch was as good as they ever came for the highlighted reason. We know not only how well he schooled his fighters, but also specific examples of his strategical genius being implemented on them for certain opponents. His analytical mind was as good as any that's ever lived, and he put it to use just as good as any. Frazier/Ali Norton/Ali Griffin/Jones Jr. (and as an aside, the rematch with Futch not in his corner) Spinks/Qawi All examples of Futch's genius as a strategist.
How about Freddie Brown, Jack Blackburn and Charley Goldman and Al Silvani? Don't forget about Mannie Seamon.
I think its a fair list. I would say Arcel was #1, just look at the champions he produced in a talent rich era. Dundee to me is a great f'n corner man, but a tad over rated as a trainer. I would say Roach has upped his game in the past few years, and deserves to me mentioned among the top 10 ATG's at trainer. What bothers me is the talent at trainer these days is aging. I see very few young talent trainers who are capable of molding a talent, and turning them in to a winner.
I agree with most of that Mendoza I would also put Arcel at #1. Definitely imo #1 of the 20th century. He seen em all, trained too many to name Arcel is kind of like Ali in the sense where you can take out half of his accomplishments, and you could still say hes the greatest.
One trainer that rarely gets a mention is Jesse Reid but he worked with some excellent boxers - Orlando Canizales & Bruce Curry to name two. Always enjoyed listening to Reid in the corner offering strategy advice. Joe Goosen impressed me with his corner work as well. Not saying these guys are up there with Futch, Arcel or Blackburn but there's been some good ones who tend to fly under the radar.
Sdunek flies under the radar as well and he has a terrific record with his guys in title fights. Nacho Berestein deserves mention as well. The duva camp took a lot of the glory, but George Benton did a terrific job for awhile. Freddie Brown.
Wegener trained more than 10 champs or beltholders and made most of them that as well. Sure not up there with the very best but HM worthy.
Everyone seems to have pretty high opinions on Eddie Futch. He was quoted as saying once that Charlie Burley was the best all around fighter he's ever seen. Pretty interesting comment.
Great choice 'Ears. :good Manvel Gabrielvan was is a badass great trainer too, but i think Sugar Nikky sadly fired him after being blatantly robbed in his masterclass of slick boxing against "Iron" Ruslan Chagaev. :verysad
Benton & Freddie Brown definitely and good call on Berestein, a hugely underrated trainer who rarely gets a mention but look at the fighters he's handled over the years.
