so i'm replacing jack johnson on that famous day in reno with iron mike. now there's little doubt i would imagine that if tyson keeps his cool he takes this, but does he handle quite possibly the most hostile and poisonous atmosphere the sport has ever witnessed and gain the win? or was the barbaric taunting and fear for his own personal safety that johnson experienced too much for tyson giving jeffries a sniff of an unlikely win?

this thread was inspired by reading a mcgrain post discussing which other black heavyweights would of thrived under such an atmos, as johnson did that day. i think he speculated that tyson would of gone 'full ******'.

Mike Tyson KO1 Johnson and Jeffries at the same time.

Johnson ranks higher... but '88 Tyson was on a disgustingly high level.

Mike Tyson would be like the unstoppable T1000 Terminator sent back in time to knock out the 3 teeth of every single klan member in that audience

I think allot is made of Tyson imploding, he didn't implode in any fight other than Holyfield 2

Hard to say how he'd react.

Too much emphasis is put on whether or not Tyson will implode and not enough of what is going to happen in the ring.

Tyson at his best was incredibly focused on fighting and although during the Spinks fight his out of ring life was in turmoil, nothing compared to Johnson mind you, in the ring he never lost his discipline.

I'd say that Tyson stops him in 3 rounds or less. Jeffries was tough but Tyson was simply more refined had would beat him to the punch consistently enough to put him away.

At that time period Jeffries would have never experienced anything close to what a Tyson could bring in terms of pressure. Not to mention this isn't prime Jeffries we are talking about making the prediction significantly easier to make.

Tyson's character is a social impossibility for the times.

To get to this fight he'd either need to learn a brutal lesson or be an entirely different man.

Imagining him plucked and dropped, he cracks and goes ****ing mental or gets a KO1.

I don't think the atmoshere does anything to Tyson, and if he was placed in a situation where he'd be the object of white hatred, it would probably rile him up further.. We are also talking about the same washed up, inactive version of Jeffries who Johnson beat, and under those circumstance, this fight isn't lasting long enough for the first drinks to take effect in the crowd..

To even get to world level in this era Tyson has to get past some fringe contenders early in his career while is hasn't eaten for a couple of days and is sleeping in a doorway.

Indeed he has to deliberately put himself in that situation when he could stay in his home town and get enough money to feed himself by shoveling ****.

There isn't going to be any Cus DaMatto to take him under his wing. He is going to have to forge his own path and learn his trade by getting on the wrong end of bad beatings.

So the real question is whether he makes it to Reno at all.

understandable janitor but in this what if scenario, let's put him in a time machine WITHOUT the issues of the culture and landscape of the era. would the tyson we know have dealt with the adversity johnson did?

i don't know, but he sure wouldn't be smiling at whitey on his way to the ring

Without considering how the era would have changed him, and just putting him in a time machine, Tyson KO 2.

Entirely different animal, a student of a more refined, effective school of boxing, with brutal body punching, speed and power, and a true, modern athlete. Strong himself, rough and touch, and angry. Jeffries, past his peak, would be run over very early.
At his peak, he'd probably only last a few rounds more.

Fighters often prosper more under a hard life than an easy life 'SILK PJS/beds etc'

How about trying to break Botha's arm ?
Pushing the referee out of the way, to continue hitting the helpless Savarese?

No fighter prospers under those kind of conditions, except in the sense that when they do gain a level playing field they become a seriously tough customer.

You had to earn a level playing field back then.

    Tyson, in a time machine??

Jeffries wouldn't come out of retirement.

He was defenseless against Johnson... He'd be fodder for 30 seconds against Tyson.
