Was Roy Jones a paper champion??

    Often these rankings are very bias, The Ring especially. Benn and Eubank did alot more and at the time there wasnt a Ring champ at SMW. I have seen it before where a fighter beats the #1 and they dont become the #1 another fighter moves into that spot. It happend recently when Ward beat Kessler who was #1 but Bute went to #1 based on his overall better record than Wards

    Roy Jones didn't plan on staying at 168 anyways, that's why he was a paper champion at 168. He left instead of fighting everyone at 168.

    Weren't Benn and Eubank career SMW's? of course they have better SMW resumes than Toney or Jones, there's no disputing that.

    At SMW Jones beat Toney who wasnt a great SMW and didnt have a very good SMW resume. N Benn and C Eubank were more accomplished champions who were fighting at a higher level.
    I guess you are basing that ranking on the Ring magazine.
    Look at who Toney beat at SMW and its not a great resume and not as good as Benn or Eubank.

    Benn and Eubank were both former MW champs before going up to SMW and winning world titles at the new weight

    RJJ was a paper champ, and holding paper titles in the MW, SMW, LHW and HW is a great feat regardless.

    Benn Collins Eubank Toney and RJJ

    there should have been some good cross atlantic match ups between 94 - 96

    Poor ol Roy always gettin' hated on. The man had talent no matter how much you want to hate on him. If only e retired after Ruiz what the haters be saying.

    I understand the ts point, his opponents were often mediocre but he did have big fights scattered along the way, and it did'nt matter what level of opposition he fought he nearly always performed to a level that was beyond excellent. Winning titles at different weights and just the man's sheer talent and dazzling skills means that Roy is definately NO paper champion.

    i believe it to be true that roy never beat a lineal or unified champion his entire career.

    he is also a proven banned anabolic steroid cheat which seriously undermine his status imo. its very rare that a proven cheat only ever cheats once, its much more likely that they have cheated on numerous occasions but only ever been caught once.

    to the first point, roy (as far as I know) never beat a lineal or unified champion true. but he did unify himself which does mean something

    IMO yes he was a 'Paper Champ'

    Still, he's the only guy to beat Hopkins in a convincing fashion, Toney was a great win, Ruiz was a good win too. With average to good opposition, he did a number on almost all of them. I wish Benn, Eubank, Watson and McClellan happened also.
