Montiel's defense (or lack thereof) is what sunk him tonight. Did he learn nothing from watching the Darchynian vs Nonaire tape? Montiel had his hands down from the start of the fight, instead of having them high. Going up against such a fast fighter like Donaire keeping hands low is just a matter of time before you get ko'd and Montiel found that out tonight. His new aggressive style of fighting is also what caused him to loose. The way he used to fight in a much smarter defensive, yet boring style is the way he should of approached this fight and maybe the outcome would of been different. It would of been a less exciting fight but Montiel would of been in better control. I thought he was a smarter fighter than this.
Seriously. All boxing fans should cheer this stoppage, it was right on the money. I don't know what is with some boxing fans today. When I started watching boxing 35 years ago, fans wanted fights to go their natural conclusion, and bitched like hell when refs prematurely ended them. This stoppage was textbook. Not a moment too soon, not a moment too late.
dude, I'll say again, ****ing convulsions is not a good sign man, possible head trauma, people have died from shots like that
I disagree. Montiel didn't respond to the ref. He couldn't even touch gloves to show he can continue. The ref had to do it for him.
While I agree to a certain degree that it was a good stoppage, in that the ref gave Montiel the benefit of the doubt, but quickly stepped in to stop the fight once it was clear he couldn't defend himself. I won't go as far as calling it a perfect stoppage, especially without the benefit of hindsight. We can never know if a tremendous punch like that could cause permanent damage to a fighter. And if a fighter is allowed to continue even when he was very hurt by the punch that dropped him, there's no telling if and additional punches will cause permanent damage. Remember Z Gorres (who montiel also fought), who was winning by wide UD, got dropped by a huge punch at the end of the last round, but made the count, survived the round and won.. only to later collapse, get hospitalized and recieve surgery to relieve swelling in his brain, thus ending a promising career. It's not inconceivable that had Gorres been counted out and attended to immediately by the ring doctors, he could still have a boxing career (albeit at the expense of getting an L) So because of that, I try not too judge too much when a fight is stopped to early or too late if someone is seriously hurt because either way it could end up permanently damaging the fighter. The ref's call is the ref's call, it's tough call to make in cases like this and I won't judge them for what is obviously a difficult call to make.
to be fair to the ref, I don't think the ref saw the spasms as we has busy pointing Donaire to the neutral corner.
Its easy to say with hindsight that it was a perfect stoppage but for me the ref should have stopped it after the KD. I know it was a championship fight but he took a huge shot & was clearly unfit to continue. There was every chance of him taking serious damage there, thank God he didnt. Anyway, great fight on a great nights boxing.
What happened to refs asking fighters who have just gotten up from a knockdown a few basic questions such as where are you, what city are you in, etc. before letting the fight go on? It could go a long way in knowing what kind of shape the fighter is in. Or the very least a good long stare in the fighters eyes or holding up a number of fingers and asking how many fingers do I have up. If a ref does this and a fighter gives correct answers then he should be allowed to go on plus it should tell the ref to not jump in too early to stop the fight just because of the previous knockdown. It won't take but a few seconds to do this and it gives the ref as much information as he can get as to what kind of shape the fighter is in.
I dunno. I think the ref was pretty sure he wasn't fit to continue, and was ready to step in immediately if he needed to. It's obvious from the ref's positioning and body language after the knockdown that the ref was going to stop the fight first chance he needed to, but was also ready to give the champ the chance to come back. It was perfect.
Will you now include Montiel in your P4P glass jaw list? edit: I didn't read all the posts yet before posting but someone already asked the same question in the first page.
The ref clearly said "come here, come here" and Montiel couldn't. It was silly to let it continue after he couldn't even respond to the ref, that meant he was out of it.
It could be done I guess, but you could argue that it gives the fighter a few more seconds to recover. And a few more seconds could be crucial in some fights and it would spark endless debates about fight outcomes especially if the fighter who was knocked down ends up winning.
It is such a high profile fight that the ref decided to give Montiel some more chance to prove his worth.
.. I thought the ref was you for a second zak!! :rofl Montiel was all ****ed up and he beat a long count and the ref let him fight on!
