What was the point of saying "come here, come here"? So when he didn't respond he could let the fight go on anyways? That makes no sense at all.

I hate to criticise the ref but I think the fight should have been stopped, though Im in comfy armchair at home watching replays & he's the man in there.
But Montiel was just in no fit state to continue, his legs had gone & was unresponsive. In that condition up against a big puncher who just nearly took his head off the fight should have been stopped.
    Great performance by Donaire.

    That was a late stoppage.

Montiel tried to get up initially and stumbled back to the ground. Refs are supposed to stop it right there.

He gave him a long count and another chance to get up and didn't even respond when he told him to come to him. He didn't even have his hands up when Nonito came running at him.

    Completely pointless.

montiel had a bad concussion already and if its followed by another bad one then he could have gotten some permanent damage there. I thought it was a late call

probably what's on the referee's mind was he doesnt wanna ruin a good fight with bad officiating.

he didnt put montiel's health on jeopardy because he was all over montiel ready to stop the fight when he ordered the fight to continue.

Exactly. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Just think about it like this: what if Montiel got up and came back to win, or even just to make it a good fight? Everybody would be saying that the refereeing was perfect.

Exactly. The ref in this fight did what refs SHOULD do. Give the fighter a chance to see if he can come back from it if he gets up and if he can't, stop it.

It amazes me that any boxing fan would object to a fight actually going to its natural conclusion. There is something wrong with many modern boxing fans - they're a bunch of feminized woosies. In my day, boxing fans were men, who bitched like hell if fights were stopped too soon!

i kind of agree with you to some extent. let the champ some benefit of the doubt

but, stumbling on the first try to get up, finally getting up only to see him out face to face? hell i'll stop it that moment. that 2 more shots is unnecessary

He couldn't have gotten up and won though could he. I felt the ref gave him enough chance with the long count, and not calling it off when he got up and fell over again.

But then to say "come to me" and see Montiel clearly not knowing what day it was and not responding, he should have stopped it there, not grab his gloves and push them up for him. He was out of it and had literally zero chance of not getting stopped in the next ten seconds.

He called it late. Montiel got up and didn't know where the **** he was. Didn't respond to any questions, didn't bring his hands up or forward when asked, he was gone. Should have stopped it there. Not a massive complaint though, but it wasn't exactly the right time.

No. Montiel was OUT. When your feet and hands twitch like that that means concussion. I was ringside. No one expected him to beat the count much less for the ref to let it continue. The fight should have been stopped as soon as Montiel fell for the second time.

When you ask a guy to bring his hands up and he doesn't do it, then you should stop the fight.

Or else, don't ask him to bring his hands up. What's the point?
