Seems as though either way is acceptable, D.T. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=10360&cat=boxer This content is protected http://boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Human:10360 This content is protected
I haven't seen much of Nino Valdez, and while records are deceiving, it sure doesnt' look on paper like a man who lost as many fights as he did, and faced a large group of smaller heavyweights, does well against a fighter of Riddick Bowe's stature and resume.
Valdez had a good jab, some decent skills.....But in my opinion, Bowe would beat him, with body punches and some hooks and uppercuts on the inside......Bowe had very good head movement, the jab wouldn´t bother Bowe.....
I edge towards bowe. valdes was always tough, matched hard and quite a lot older than most realise by the time he made it. There were so many fighters to climb over to get there and he gatecrashed the ratings after losing about 4 in a row to good fighters by outworking a still good charles who had taken him too lightly. They say he had heavy hands but often let guys off the hook after hurting them, a gentle giant. who knows, Had nino been groomed like bowe was maybe he would look as good as bowe did?
This would be a good brawl from two sturdy big men that liked to mix it up on the inside. I think Bowe ultimately breaks him down in the middle rounds and forces a stoppage.
valdes had a stop start career that hadnt realy got going. 1953 was valdes's breakthrough year. he had 8 fights in all and started the year geting outpointed 3 straight in 3 months against archie moore, billy gilium and bob baker, his final fight of 52' was against harold johnson another points loss but image that? fighting moore and johnson back to back then losing a SD then geting edged out by bob baker then coming away from that to start a 11 fight winning streak that included beating ezzard charles, knocking out rated europeans neuhaus and karel syz and then blowing away new kid on the block tommy jackson? Valdes shows a lot of character to do this, its almost like those losing fights were an apreintiship he had to come through to make it as a contender. Alas, there was already too many miles on the clock to do much beter after that point but had he been groomed from day one as an olympian who knows? I dont know what the comparison would be for bowe to do this. Maybe when he was still a bit green and raw (about 1990) and bowe got say tim witherspoon, evander holyfeild, buster douglas and tony tucker over a four month spell how he would have got on? It might have broke him.
