Would Jack Johnson have been an honorable mention at the time, given his lengthy rain and numerous fights against some of the better men?

 

He would have made many lists.

At this point the argument about who was the heavyweight GOAT usualy came down to Jeffries, Johnson, Dempsey and it was more Johnson or Dempsey with younger fight fans.

Although his star was fading at this point he would still have been highly regarded. Young Griffo also.

agreed, so greb makes it three. then leonard, gans and ross make regular appearances on lists, i would say. the first part of the twentieth century sure was stacked with greats!

yeah all great fighters, although they'd all miss my personal top ten. you see them creeping onto some lists, though.
