i envision one hell of a fight here with technique going to bowe but i see roland as the harder puncher and overall better boxer(even though bowe has better technique)whos winning this war of attrition? does anyone see a ko or stoppage of this fight?if so who why and how?
I think you got this a little backwards.. Bowe was the harder puncher, while Roland MAY have been the slightly better technician. And even if Lastarza was marginally better in skill, I don't see it as being enough to overcome Bowe's advantages, in size, power, chin and persistance. At roughly 180 lbs, and I believe standing less than 6'0", with very little fire power, Roland would be drastically outmatched, especially with a mostly defensive fighting game...Lastarza was listed by experts of his time as being one of the best defensive heavyweights ever, and that might keep him alive for a few rounds, but I really don't think that a smaller man can beat Riddick by fighting a defensive fight all evening. Bowe ends this fairly early.
thanks for enlightning me. see i can take criticism without being sour. i love this board it opens up so much opporunity to go to the land of make believe. lol
Lastarza was an outstanding fighter no doubt. I have often heard reports that some ringsiders actually gave him the decision in the first meeting with Marciano, but I don't believe that any film footage is available to verify this, so I'm only going by word of mouth, ( for whatever that's worth.) I just don't think that he had enough of the physical tools or the right sort of fight game to compete effectively with most heavyweights, starting from Liston's era onward.. He might have proven to be a very good opponent for Floyd Patterson in his prime, and certainly would have made an interesting cruiserweight.
Everyone can be wise AFTER the event. I have read a sports illustrated article about lastarza BEFORE he fought marciano where he was talked up as the next big thing, comparisons were already being made with gene tunney, ray arcel was interviewed for the piece but he only had resavations about rolands size, but still considered him a very good prospect.
Lastarza was a well managed but not great fighter ,I don't think he can out box the considerably bigger ,and more powerful Bowe for 12 rds ,I see a late stoppage win for Bowe.
Oh please...nobody is having an easy night of a game LaStarza, he was a top notch defensive fighter by all accounts. LaStarza would spoil him but lose the decision. Bowe would chase him with the jab all night, probably look ugly, but win most of the rounds with LaStarza refusing to engage.
The only two guys that I can think of who would make role over Roland are our main men men Bert Cooper and Chuck Wepner.
Bowe wud b lucky, to, get by ol Henry's left hook . just look at the way he was smacked around by Golota, and Holyfield , neither of which hit as hard as ol Sir Henry Cooper :deal
