Bert Sugar and Teddy Atlas both pick Gene Tunney as their alltime #5 heavyweight; they also both put Tunney on their Top-13 Alltime P4P lists (Sugar #13, Atlas #10).

How would you letter grade (A, B, C, D, F) their assesment of Tunney?

I had to restart this thread after screwing up the poll ....

on the original thread, Jordz posted the following:

    #5 heavy? no

top 13 all time? no...not a knock against him. wins against dempsey and greb are great but just thinking about who would be left off the list as a results makes me say no

I'd rate their assessment overall C. top #13 theres an argument, top 10 there isn't and top 5 at heavy is absurd

I agree with Jorodz, Top 5 at HW is absurd....But in my opinion top 15 p4p I think theres an solid argument, certainly.....Greb, Loughran, Dempsey.....only one defeat, against the GREAT Harry Greb......
    Pretty good resume !!

Tunney has a degree of the Marciano effect, beating every man he faced. Some may think his Dempsey win was truly great and Dempsey wasnt as far gone as his fans claim he was and the dominance of the wins were great. So you could consider him the best of that HW era at a stretch. He was ahead of his time in terms of skill set, being such a complete all round boxer puncher. He won the series over Greb, so maybe despite Greb's depth he does indeed deserve to be ranked over Greb despite Greb being smaller, on that basis maybe Soldier Bartlet should rank over Greb....Based on that you could argue the P4P list is the most valid argument as at HW his resume depth is just lacking as much as Douglas, Bowe, McCall and Rahman....

Lists are usually about favorites anyway and favorite traits no matter how someone tries to justify them

They include his LHW resume and achievements of Greb and such. You have to factor that in. Bert Sugar ranked Tunney at #5 on his HW list that he did for Ringside, I guess Atlas agreed with his placement. It's not a bad pick P4P although I'd have Tunney slightly lower, but as far as HWs I don't agree with that type of criteria. It doesn't seem right, but if you include his history it has a case... although then Ezzard Charles could be a top 3 HW? That's not really fair to me, though.

In that case, understanding their method of ranking I'll give them a C. And that feels generous.

i very much agree. in a p4p sense, his wins over greb and his lhw resume is totally relevant. but his heavyweight resume is threadbare: certainly nowhere near top 10

    I give it a D.

Tunney's body of work at HW simply can't justify a top 10 ranking let alone a top 5. In terms of p4p I suppose 13 is generous it but far more plausible.

I don't have a problem with the P4P ranking...had he stuck around a few more years at heavy, maybe I could see it. He just didn't do enough to justify that ranking as it stands.

That said, I do generally think he's greatly underrated in H2H matchups at heavyweight.

He´s no Norman Stone though. :bart

I have Tunney just in my Top30 at hw. P4p I guess Top20 is fair, Top15 would be a bit of a stretch, considering who he is competing here with, but still possible.
