You mean recently, or in general? I've seen him fight quite a few times, against Vic, Cermeno 2x, his last fight, Arce.
Just generally, in his prime, there isn't many more fighters with more intelligence. In fact, I just left a post in the Brit forum on the 'what fights have you watched today thread' about the Rojas fight. He's a magnificently smart fighter IMO. I dont think those fights aptly sum him up, Vic was a stylistic nightmare and bantam(Cermeno fights) was never going to be a good weight for him. Fighters may lose their physical attributes, but their intelligence often remains, Cristian is a testament to that.
I dont think he's not a smart fighter, but by the same token, I dont think he's especially smart, but that could just be me missing something. To be fair to him, Cermeno is an awkward character to fight, he has this ability to make you fight his fight, at his tempo, he gave Moreno problems in their first encounter imo.
I think, although he may have slowed down, in terms of reflexes and hand speed, he still possesses the mental smarts that gave him success in the first place. He has these little, subtle movements to avoid incoming punches that can at times be hard to pick up on, and he's still quite adept at laying traps. In the Rojas fight, the third round, a thing of absolute beauty. You can count on one hand how many shots Rojas lands, Cristian either slips or blocks almost every single punch. James Toney would be proud of his defence on the ropes in that round in particular.
Juan Manuel Marquez. in the words of Rocky Juarez, ''He figures you out then he breaks you down !'' /even at 37byears old the ring intelligence is awsome !
I personally think that although Giovani is not p4p smart his ring intelligence is higher than what people think. I have talked to him enough times to realize that he knows his stuff. His corner has told me that he is able to adjust his strategy when needed on his own.
