What your non boxing mates say about our fighters

Because people being pissed up and talking **** spoils my enjoyment. I don't mind watching a game of football, having a laugh, missing a bit of the action, not really giving it my 100% attention etc but I don't like doing that when I'm watching a fight at 3am.

 

How many people thought Valuev had been robbed against Haye simply because they were "having a laugh" with friends instead of watching the fight...

Boxing is full of nunances and to appreciate, and understand, these you need to be watching...

 

If people carry on acting like they are in this thread, Boxing will just keep going one way and that isn't up.

 

This is a boxing forum and, natrually, will attract those amongst us who take more than a casual interest in the sport. The BBC forum, alternativly, is completely different and you will find a different type of poster on there.

There is room for everyone but that doesn't mean that I have to respect all the same.

 

I don't think its a case of that- its all about mass media coverage, which on the most part for boxing is either non-existent or lazy.

There may be an elitist attitude, but that stems from the fact to seemingly have a knowledge about boxing these days you need to get on websites like this or have sky or search out items on it.

 

Yeah, it requires a fair bit of effort to follow boxing "properly" these days.

i've never set foot in a ring , let alone fought but my love of boxing satrted with central t.v.'s mid week fight night. british title fights ,up and coming british fighters, title eliminators the lot. so the uk sports fan got to see the likes of mark kaylor from day 1 as they made their way up; the british title fights were between 2 men who half the sporting public knew about. there is still a latent interest in boxing - the haye valuev and haye harrison fights show that. my village pub was packed for the fight, but that was the first time in ages that many of them had seen boxing live on tv. i know sky have hugely funded boxing but in 1 way they have killed the sport ,because not as many people are watching and getting interested.contrast how frank bruno is, and was, a national treasure but mention carl froch's name and you get blank looks. if boxing was on itv/bbc froch's fight would be must see viewing for millions.we go down to another pub in town where they will put the saturday night boxing for us - we're a bit sad, sat with boxing news, pint n a wine happily watching the fights,.having said that many of the regulars come over and ask who's fighting and take an interest - after the napa- mcdonnell fight last year loads of people were coming up asking us to explain why napa had lost!! (i wasn't able to help them - lol!). but therein lies the central problem - sky will pay for it, the boxers/promters/trainers are earning, but its done at the expense of boxing becoming a minority interest

 

great stuff. There's so much wrong with that sentence, sums up some casuals. I can imagine that conversation as well, a scouser always compares someone he doesn't know to a well known footy player :yep

I was in my mates for that fight and everyone apart from me was getting bladdered, half watching etc. Then after hearing Watt's scorecard they all looked shocked when Haye got the decision, whilst I couldn't see what the fuss was about

 

Strangely enough for me, the mate I can't stand talking boxing about with is the one who watches it as much as me. Most of my mates know a fair bit about british boxing and we have decent conversations about it but this 1 lad just likes to be controversial solely because he watches a fair bit. He always says Pacquiao will get stopped by a body shot for example cos of his past, even though that was years ago and Pacquiao has been levels above his recent opponents

 

Boxing is really quiet at the moment and as fans we always get cranky without our fix. I just hope things pick up in the future and a fight with Pac and Floyd would certainly help to get us back on track.


However, I reckon when non fans start to talk about it whether its bull**** or genuine knowledge it should be welcomed with open arms coz i'm sure at some point we have all reckoned we knew more than we actually did about the sport yet didnt realise that until we became proper fans with more knowledge and only then we realised how daft we might or mightr not have sounded. The very fact some non fan is even talking about the sport should be looked upon as a good thing and we should remember that we were maybe lucky enough to have some great fighters facing each other regularly to help feed our curiosity of the sweet science. A potential fan who hasnt been fully convinced yet is just someone who hasnt seen Gatti v Ward 1 yet or MAB v Morales 1 and so on and so on.


If anything, now is a perfect time for recruiting new fans coz with all the hype the movie (the fighter) is getting its a great opportunity to show people that famous fight. Gatti v Ward 1 is a fantastic fight for showing folks how good the sport can be.

Us boxing fans are a funny breed. We complain about the sport not getting in new fans but when people get talking about down the pub or somewhere we dont like the fact that they are. Like they cant talk about boxing because they dont know it.

Though I do ****in hate people spouting **** like Haye-khan would be a good fight. I jump straight down their throat and correct the *******s and tell them that they are wrong.

 

I know, right. Haye would blow him away early.

I tend to watching boxing alone, primarily because I'm a very unpopular man, but I also can't be doing with have to talk people through a fight and educate them/answer questions all night. I only know one person who is properly into boxing so I'll watch a fight with him now again but generally speaking I prefer to be on my own for a fight of any real significance.
