Henry, once again you came to my rescue ! Benny Valgar it is. Born in Paris
in 1899, Valgar became as good a boxer as a Young Griffo or Willie Pep.
But he had two problems preventing him from a title.
1-He was a stablemate of the great Benny Leonard, whom he sparred with. But their mgr. Billy Gibson, would never match them of course .
2- Valgar couldn't hit very hard, and the fans liked a banger.
But Benny Valgar set a record which will never be broken :
In 239 bouts Valgar was NEVER KO'D. or STOPPED in his career.Truly amazing !
Many years ago in Coney Island area i shook hands with the old retired Valgar
and his face seemed unlike a boxer's,no scars !

As for the chin bit, a good amount of classic fighters came close to matching his streak of durability. Greb for example was stopped on a freak arm break, the likes of Armstrong and Saddler stopped in their second fights when they were green teenagers.

Britton comes to mind as well.

Nice one Bert. Never been one to look deeply into Valgar, and only took a look the first time about 2 months ago when "Bugger" was asking about Aussie Jimmy Hill's USA record.

You've certainly met 'em all Bert...

.... and HH has certainly guessed them all. Nothing escapes him.

R, A few points. Harry Greb,
infinitely superior to Benny Valgar, was stopped
truly one time in his first year to a bigger, older Joe Chip.
Henry Armstrong was kod twice.Once in 1931 to Al Iovino, and years later to Fritzie Zivic in 1941.
Sandy Saddler was stopped in his second fight by Jock Leslie, who I saw later on in MSG. Leslie in turn was stopped by Willie Pep.
But my man was NEVER stopped in 239 bouts. A record...Cheers...
