My post was pretty good too  This should be a Sticky. Everyone should contribute to one Fighter at the least :yep
O.K I thought i'd contribute to the thread by showing a guy we see on our screens week in,week out,but some younger viewers may not really know who he is.Not only is Jim Watt one of the sports greatest commentators :yep:yep,he could fight a bit too. :bbb Jim Watt (born 18 July 1948) is a former Scottish boxer, who became world champion in the lightweight division when Roberto Duran left the title vacant in 1979 and the WBC had him fight Alfredo Pitalua.Watt kocked out Pitalua in twelve rounds. Watt beat such notables as future world champion sean O'Grady, former woeld champion Perico Fernandez,Charlie Nash and Howard Davis JR..The fight with O'Grady was particually contreversial;Watt won by knockout in round twelve when the referee stopped the fight because of a cut suffered by O'Grady, according to the book,The ring boxing the 20th century, the cut was produced by a head-butt, in which case the judges' scorecards would have been checked, and whoever was ahead given the win by a technical decision. The referee, however, declared that O' Grady's cut had been produced by a punch, therefore, Watt officially won the fight by knockout. When O'Grady won the WBA title four months later Watt was declared the lightweight champion by the ring. On 20 June 1981, he fought his last fight, when losing the WBC world title to Alexis Arguello by a 15 round decision in London. Watt retired with a record of 38 wins (27 by knockout) and 8 losses (3 by knockout). CHARLEY BURLEY This content is protected WEIGHT- Middleweight NATIONALITY- American BIRTH DATE- 6/9/1917 RECORD- 83(50)-12-2-1 From Bessemer, Pennsylvania, Burley is one of the great fighters of the 1940's unknown to most fight fans. Why? Because he was excellent. And potential adversaries didn't want to find out just how excellent. He was never granted a shot at the welterweight nor the middleweight titles simply due to his skin colour(to white champs) and his formidability. Fighters accused of ducking him include Billy Conn, Marcel Cerdan, Jake LaMotta, Holman Williams and even Sugar Ray Robinson(yes, you read that right). Of course, not everybody ducked him, otherwise his greatness would not be so evident. He went 2-1 with Fritzie Zivic(future WW champ), beat Archie Moore and Billy Soose. He dropped two 10 round decisions to future LHW and HW great Ezzard Charles, both contested over a 5-week period. One of Burley's most noteable performances was against J.D Turner, who is reported to have outweighed Charley by in excess of 70lbs, Burley produced a counter-punching masterclass, stopping him when Turner failed to come out for the 7th round. His former sparring partner once said: "I see a lot of Charley in this kid, Roy Jones Jr. Both had unorthodox styles, could hit you from any angle, both hard to hit. Charley jabbed more than Jones, if Jones would concentrate on boxing as Charley did, he would become an all-time great." Eddie Futch simply offered this: ''Burley is the finest all-around fighter I ever saw." He was never stopped in his 98 bouts, was included in The Ring's 100 greatest punchers and 80 best fighters of the last 80 years, being ranked 38. Who's to say just how high he could have been if given the chance? He was inducted to the IBHOF in 1992, considered to be many years later than he should have. In a way, Burley's legacy is built around the fact that we did not know just how great he was. Which, in itself is a testament to his greatness. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81non05aKX4[/ame]
It wasn't as informative as I would have liked, but Burley is quite an obscure, albeit brilliant fighter. I just wrote it out myself with whatever information I could get. I might add to it at some point if I can get more stuff on him. Cheers, by the way. Great thread.:good
No worries mate, i love that video. any reason to watch i will . Charley was special. Your right imagine if he got the chances he truly deserved. Thanks Mate.
