If Jerry Quarry didn't get injured in June 1968, and did fight Ol 'Enry. I think most would say a TKO, between 4 and 8 rounds. Jerry could do it with those left hooks to the body.
But you are comparing Urtain to Bonavena and saying that somehow because Henry beat Urtain he would beat Bonavena. Thats ridiculous. Bonavena was miles ahead of Urtain in every department. Ive got plenty of footage on Urtain going back to his win over Jimmy Jones in 1970 and he was nothing special at all. Period. He was European champion. Big deal. Have you ever seen Peter Weiland fight? Weiland was the guy he won the title off of and Weiland was literally no better than an amateur and I mean that. The guy was awful. He was simply another big strong guy who made Carnera and Jess Willard look like Sugar Ray Robinson and Willie Pep. So Im sorry if Urtain doesnt impress me and frankly those 12 rated contenders were for the most part lower tier contenders at best (and its entirely arguable how many of those guys were legimately contenders and in whos eyes; Ring, Boxing, WBA, WBC, etc, Nat Fleischer for his part was well known for ranking undeserving foreign fighters in order to build interest and sales in his magazine abroad). In another post you stated that these were the ten (now you say 12) contenders and the reason why they were so important to his record: dick richardson (euro champ, beat ezzard charles and bob baker) Yes he beat a very faded Ezzard Charles who was coming off a two fight losing streak and would in fact win only two of his next and last six contests. Baker was in his last year as a pro and also coming off a loss. He would lose three of his next and last four contests. Richardson wasnt exactly an iron man. joe bygraves (comonwealth champ): You fail to mention that Cooper only defeated Bygraves a year before he ever became commonwealth champ, in an eight rounder. After becoming champ Bygraves knocked Cooper out in 9 rds. You also fail to mention that after stopping Cooper Bygraves only won 7 of his next 28 contests.... brian london (beat pastrano, radmacher, roger rischer and zora foley). Yeah London beat Pastrano, only outweighed him 20 pounds and took tries to do it. I dont think beating Rademacher really qualifies you for anything. Yeah he beat Rischer who was coming off a loss and would only win 2 more of his next and last five fights. Zora Folley as well was past his best and would win only 3 of his next and last 7 fights and those wins, like the others listed above came against pedestrian competition. Brian may be remembered fondly over there but he lost over a third of his bouts and half of those losses were by KO. joe erskine (beat chuvalo & pastrano) It wasnt until his third try that Cooper managed to beat Erskine. And if your HW resume is built on wins over a LHW (sandwiched between that LHWs other two losses) and Chuvalo, well. Not a lot to brag on. alex miteff (beat nino valdes) This one was funny. The best you could come up with to show how good Miteff was for Coopers resume was a win over Nino Valdez. That win came almost three years earlier. By the time Miteff fought Cooper he was coming off a loss and had either been bumped from the ratings or was on the verge of being bumped. Miteff won three of his next and last 9 contests. roy harris (world title chalenger) yes, a very weak world challenger who was coming off of two losses when he faced Cooper, both KO losses and would have only two more fights, losing his last by KO. wayne bethea (beat ezzard charles & ernie terrel) Yes but when he faced Cooper he had lost 3 of his last six fights and had beaten no one of note in several years and that includes his SD over Terrell who was several years away from becoming a contender. karl mildenburger (world title chalenger & euro champ) He beat Mildenberger in Karls last fight when Karl was coming of a KO loss and had lost 2 of his last three. hubert hilton (rated in top ten 1966). Rated in the top ten in 1966? Really. How did he manage that when he lost three fights back to back in late 1965 to early 1966 against Roberto Davila, then Cooper, then won 2 more that year against Mel Turnbow and Billy Joiner who werent rated and then lost 6 of his last 8. jose urtain (beat 4 euro champions, ring magazine fighter of the month) Weve already been over this one.
:goodvery well reserched. Im not going to make it a competition of who had the worst resume but 99% of winning records read like this. there are world champions (american ones) who you could but wont say the same about especialy once you get into the colour tv era. cooper beat rated names and compeated at an elite level, I know you agree with this. by the way you missed out that richardson knocked out karl mildenburger in one round, thats right, the guy who bonavena couldnt knock out and who gave ali a harder fight than sonny liston, clevland wiliams and floyd patterson.
why 13-2-2 hilton made the top ten in 1966 is a matter for ring magazine and the other contenders who beat up on hilton after cooper and could not do as efficient a job. Fighters like ellis, bonavena and mac foster all had a much harder time against hilton than cooper did. cooper was the first guy to stop hilton, he did it in 2 rounds, it took bonavena 10, ellis the full distance and much later foster did it in 5.
I could have mentioned that miteff had beat harold carter, wayne bethea and alonso johnson the previous year and was coming off a respectable points loss against #2 eddie machen after 3 solid KO wins, no shame in that.
Quarry would have knocked Cooper cold. Cooper admitted it himself; neither Cooper nor his manager wanted anything to do with Quarry. For one, Cooper always had a durability problem, and Quarry could bang. Second, Quarry threw an excellent right hand counter over his opponent's left hook; thus, a left hooker like Cooper would have been vulnerable in this fight. Sorry Cooper fans, but this is just not Henry's fight.
1968, Computer Results, Jerry Quarry by KO 7. Rounds; 1) 10-9 Cooper 2) 10-9 Quarry 3) 10-9 Cooper 4) 10-9 Quarry 5) 10-9 Quarry 6) 10-10 Even 7) TKO 1:46 of the Round. A left hook to the body puts 'Enry down for an 8-count. ,,,After a brief flurry, Quarry drops 'Enry with a left hook to the body, and a chopping ,,,right to the jaw. Cooper gets up before the count, but is in no condition to continue.
Whatever Chok, you can try to build up Miteff and Hilton all you want but I dont think anyone is looking as those victories on Henry's record as anything approaching important wins.
in 1968 but the 1963 cooper was a much better fighter than the 1968 version. henry fought a better ali than quarry ever did and did better than quarry both times.
OKAY Quarry did better than "Enry vs Bodell, whats the point? Jerry does not lose to any 185 lb fighter in 1968, including Bob Foster. I guess thats why this Boxing 24 has Bugner as they world beater! Without ever beating one!
I don't see Henry beating Quarry. I think Jerry at some point catches Henry with the right hand and sparks him. It could be a pretty close fight while it lasted, Jerry was essentially a counter puncher, and Henry who relied almost entirely on his left jab and hook, usually clinched if he couldn't get the jab or hook off cleanly. I don't think it would be the greatest fight but Jerry KO's him.
In 1968 Quarry was not that good. That year Jerry had a water skiing accident and still on the mend when he laboured with a woeful opponent called Willis Earls who took rounds off him in a close fight. Earls had a bad record and usually got knocked out by guys with a pulse. By 1970 Quarry was a much better fighter, but on this 1968 form anything could happen. The way he was against Earl in 68’ any top fighter would have beat Quarry that night. It is important to check the timeline with these things.
What was close about it? Referee: Leonard Zuniga 100-93 Judge: Eddie Lopez 99-91 Judge: Henry Moreno 94-91 "Jerry Quarry, No. 3 contender for the world's heavyweight championship, protected his high ranking by winning a unanimous decision over Willis Earls in the main event of Promoter Reuben Rodrigues' fight card Tuesday night at Joe Freeman Coliseum. Quarry, from Bellflower, Calif., held the upper hand all the way over his opponent from Austin, Texas, but never succeeded in flooring Earls. Quarry came out of the battle with a cut over his left eye, received in the 7th round, and a bruised ear. Earls suffered a bloody nose and his left eye was nearly closed at the end of the scrap." -San Antonio Express. Quarry had beaten Spencer that year and lost a majority dec to Ellis. Ellis would have stopped Cooper and so would Quarry ,imo.
