    Round 4

Armenta shoeshines to the body and then brings a hard left hook up to the face as Cruz tries to stay with him punch for punch. Cruz ducks with his guard against his face and takes an uppercut to the throat, right between his wrists. Cruz is staying in the pocket and flurrying. Armenta gets out and starts jabbing and hooking at him, landing well. Cruz jabs out straight into Armenta's face and then walks through a few uppercuts to get inside and touch the body. Armenta bounces his fists off Cruz's head several times at mid-range as Cruz dances around and looks for an opportunity to run in and throw body punches again. Cruz really doesn't seem bothered by Armenta's power, standing up to these shots very well. Armenta slugs with him sloppily down the stretch, both landing to the face and both looking pretty marked up to show for it.

40-36 on all cards for Pablo Armenta

He has room for improvement. He needs to hit the weight room, and learn to pace himself in the ring.

Another 4-rounder to kill some time:

California-based light welterweight Adrian Vargas debuts against once-beaten Franky Martinez.

IB funfact: Vargas, a lauded amateur, is the nephew of HOF referee Joe Cortez.

    Round 1

Martinez feels out with jabs. Vargas circles out and puts together high and low jabs off the back foot. Vargas starts to cut the ring off and intimidates Martinez to the ropes where he lands several very nice left hooks in succession to the head and ribs. Vargas is landing some really beautiful combos here for someone making their pro debut, putting mean left hooks together with very crisp right hands down the pipe. Martinez sticks his jab out in Vargas' face to hold him in place and whip him to the body with his right. Vargas circles out and fights his way off the ropes with some uppercuts, all while ducking his head behind his gloves. More nice combos by Vargas, using a lot of very fast hooks with a good deal of snap on them. Martinez follows, flicking his hands out and getting hooked in the head. Martinez whips Vargas in the body several times at the end of the round and the two nod to each other politely.

    10-9 Vargas

    Round 2

Martinez pressures, with hooks and right hands shot out of a high-shoulder stance. Vargas throws combos as moving backwards as he did coming forward and manages to block a good deal of the headshots of the very aggressive Martinez, who still lands some hooks to the body. Vargas crunches Martinez above the belt line with a very loud left hook. Martinez is lobbing hard overhand rights coming forward, and walks right into the power of Vargas. Martinez is hurt and tries to either hold on or back away but can't seem to make up his mind which. Vargas tags him against the ropes with uppercuts and leans on him. Straight right hand from Vargas. Martinez answers with some hooks to the body again.

    20-18 AV

    Round 3

Vargas is landing blazing fast punches from every imaginable angle but Martinez is tough and keeps whipping back with mostly body hooks as they battle from one end of the ring to the other. Vargas is pushed into a corner and takes a right hand to the chin but pushes his way out with some uppercuts and then starts hooking Martinez in the head. They grapple and Vargas winds up with his back to the ropes again as Martinez tees off with overhand rights and sweeping body shots. Vargas starts to move out of the way of Martinez and look to counter him but his fighting instincts take over again and he leans right back into him, and the slugfest starts anew. Martinez is standing up to some CRAZY hooks to the face that are snapping his head to the side very abruptly.

    30-27 V

    Round 4

Vargas lands a hook to the body and starts going off on Martinez, throwing hard right hands and left hooks to the face along with body shots while backing up. Martinez is covering up and looking to jab or stick a right hand in between the outbursts of Vargas, but is getting rocked and wobbled regularly. Martinez simply will not go down. Vargas puts together an uppercut and a hook while backing up and looks a bit exhausted from landing so many punches. Martinez keeps jabbing fiercely in Vargas' face until the final bell, showing no fear.

    40-36 Vargas

All the judges have it the same as me, giving Vargas his first professional victory...but what a hard ******* Martinez is!

We're going to finish up with bantamweights.

    9-0 (8.) Hanzel Martinez vs. 4-2 (3) Alejandro Solorio.

Oh nevermind - they're only picking it up midway, at round #3. No RBR.

They keep mentioning Margarito's name in reference to Martinez, but he's way too small to be a sparring partner. :think

He does have a bit of tornado in his style, though. He's much taller than his opponent and grinding him down with uppercuts, walking through flush shots to the face to get through. Solorio is just trying to plant his feet and land as much as he can before Martinez catches up to him and starts bumping him on the chest.

Ah, Margarito is there in the front row. Martinez must be a protege.

He is completely shellacking this Solorio guy, looking really powerful.

Wow, Solorio came back with a nice little sequence of hooks catching Martinez standing up straight. It might not be enough to steal the round though, and it seems from the highlights they showed of rounds 1 & 2 that Martinez has essentially been in control the whole way. Martinez is still landing heavily, but Solorio's punches stand out because it's the cleanest he's landed yet. Solorio is in bad trouble near the end of the round but survives.

    Yeah!

They were actually hyping it up at the end of Solo Boxeo.

It sounded like the commentators were backing Brandon Rios.

He is my pick too. :good
