You can call they may have been "old" but there was no point in Moore's career when he was doing better, Walcott was fighting as good as he ever was, and in the first fight, Charles again fought as well as he ever did. Marciano was hardly young himself, he was only 2 years younger than Charles.

The skill level was different in Marciano's fights with Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, and Jersey Joe Walcott too. Calling them "old" does not mean they still weren't great fighters.

Which Ali are you talking about.. really RJJ was never a real heavyweight, Ali definitely had the punch to hurt Roy, roy would definitely get caught and stopped too

Rumble in the Jungle Ali, or around that time. Ali did have a punch that could take Roy out, but (1) he'd need to land it--Roy wasn't easy to counter--and (2) Roy's punch resistance gets discounted b/c of how hard he fell off after Tarver knocked him out. Roy might peck his way to a decision. There's nothing definite about him getting stopped against someone like Ali.

'77 Ali Maybe, he has a chance. But no version of Ali before '77.

He got a gift in the first Tarver fight, coming off his huge victory over Ruiz ... what is left out here is that his body was in shock having to come off the steroids he took to blow up to fight Ruiz at 200 in the first place. Like how he gained 20 pounds of muscle in a year to fight Ruiz . Take away the juice , you take away the Ruiz victory and you have at best a top 15 all time light heavyweight with no big punch and a weak chin.

Any of the heavyweights mentioned, Charles, Walcott, Marciano, Tunney, Dempsey and Patterson would destroy Jones.

again, your feelings towards jones clouds your judgement. jones went into camp for the ruiz fight at 192, his walking around weight. he officially weighed 193 for the ruiz fight but that was after a scuffle between alton merkerson and norman stone and they hit the scale. the next day before the fight, jones was reweighed and was at 199 lbs. see video at 3:00 (6:00 for the reweigh):

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrHydFIwfBo&feature=related[/ame]

mackie shillstone, who worked with jones for the ruiz fight, said that jones was at 200 lbs and had 6% body fat after the ruiz fight. to make 175 again, jones ended up destroying his body and still got away with it once vs tarver. as far as roids go, roy was tested in nevada and those tests were negative after the ruiz fight. the only time he showed positive was for andro vs hall in 2000. andro could be bought over the counter at the time and was in supplements as well.

the fact is jones was one of the most magnificent fighters who has ever stepped in the ring. he was fighter of the decade and was at or near the top of the lb for lb rankings for almost a decade. i would bet heavy on jones vs all of the fighters you have listed, and i'm a broke school teacher.

i'm willing to bet that even people with incredibly low IQs can look at the videos above and predict that jones would defeat fitz. but that doesn't stop some of the geniuses on the classic boards from making the prediction that fitz would win. (btw, the knockdown at :30 sec in the jones video is incredible)

I'd be willing to bet that even people with incredibly low IQs can use their rudimentary brains to figure out that Jones taking a quarter of the LHW title from Reggie Johnson is nothing in comparison to Fitzsimmons knocking out a lineal HW champ like Corbett while weighing a couple pounds over 160, but i'd probably be wrong.

Well the original poster specified a Prime Roy on a perfect night. So why are people bringing up the fact that he couldn't beat Tarver and Danny Greene? Ok using the same exact logic here is who jones could beat.

Joe Louis- Marciano knocked him out of the ring with a punch that was telegraphed from a mile away. Jones was much faster and explosive. Louis would never see it coming.

Ali- Frazier knocked Ali down with a huge left hook. As we all know, Roy defeated Jeff Lacey to become the official best left hooker in history. Jones hook > Fraziers hook. Ali wouldn't got up if it was Jones throwing that punch.

Wlad Klitchsko- Klitchsko got stopped by Corrie Sanders who is far from impressive. The Ruiz that Jones beat was much better than Sanders, therefore Jones stops Wlad even more impressively. KO round 1

Sonny Liston- Liston had a very weak chin as evidenced by his KO 1 loss to Ali who was not known as a huge banger. Capt Hook destroys liston. first second first minute first round.

George Foreman- Foreman was outboxed by an immobile Ali and couldn't knock him out. Ali had a weak chin as evidenced by his being dropped by the european bum Henry Cooper and Foreman still couldn't get him out of there. Jones has experience outboxing huge punchers as evidenced in his fight with Tito Trinidad.

Lennox Lewis- Lennox suffered 2 brutal 1 punch ko losses. He possibly has brain damage and should have retired at that point. Jones would capitalize on this and get Lewis out of there early. K0 round 4

you mean the lineal white champion corbett. fitz was 167 and corbett was 184. great accomplishment but there's actual footage and both fighters look horrible imo. with this said, fitz is still a great fighter but he's not going to beat a prime jones.

btw, fitz was stopped 7 times in his career. not sure how long he would be able to last with jones.

don't wanna be a dick but this is a pretty weak post. it's an almost cartoonish portrayal of jones

exactly, critics point to the end of jones' career on why he wasn't great or why he couldn't beat a certain fighter but if we did that with other fighters there might not be any great fighters to speak of.
