Jones Jr v Lebedev is another Vit v Briggs - a fight that shouldn't be sanctioned.

There's nothing wrong with well past prime fighters taking on challenges because they can still have enough to make great fights(Simms-Duran, Duran-Barkley, Pascal-Hopkins, Morales-Pacquiao 1). I just have a problem when they've been sparked repeatedly and/or are incredibly faded like Jones(Tarver, Johnson, ?????Green?????) and still choose to go on(Morales/Maidana......smh). Especially since Jones in his prime would've taken Lebedev apart.

If you look at each guys last 5 fights, you would have to favor Lebedev. But, lets not forget that Roy has only been stopped once in the last 7 years. If he was getting kod every other fight that would be different, but hes not. If he can perform as he did two years ago against Sheika he has a good chance in this fight. I dont know if he can and it does seem like he has diminished a lot in the last 2 years, but you cant not allow him to fight based on speculation. Everyone thought Hopkins could hurt him too. Lebedevs resume isnt all that immpressive to be honest and there is a huge disparity in experience in Roys favor. Again, I favor probably Lebedev about 4-1 , but I dont think its a massive mismatch.

Roy wants to go out on top. Before the Calzaghe fight I always beleived he could make a comeback but his performance in that fight showed that he doesn't have it any more. The fighting spirit is not there.

I think thats why people tend to tune in and still watch Roy Jones Jr. hoping to get a glimpse of what he used to be but wind up being dissapointed. Clearly not the same fighter that once dominated the sport. Total tradegy

he trains like he fights throws 3 punches then moves around the ring just starring at his opponent, if he would fight like he use to and engage with his speed he probably wouldnt take K.O's in the back of the head.

The Lacy fight was the last great Jones performance. Lebedev is not a good idea for Jones :(

Yes, putting a 42 year old without a win over a top 10 ranked guy in 8 years whose only cruiserweight fight ended in a 1st round stoppage loss in with a top 10 natural cruiserweight is an unfair fight, of course it is.

I don't recall Jones in his prime ever fighting a 42 year old without a win over a top 10 ranked guy in 8 years whose only performance at his weight ended in a 1st round stoppage defeat.

The 'tragedy' has nothing to do with money, so I don't understand why you're bringing up Jones's wealth as compared to journeymen fighters. The tragedy is because of Jones's age and his declined abilities. He could get seriously hurt, possibly permanently. Whether a guy is a billionaire or a pauper, that is something that should always be guarded against... hence the thread.

My priorities are very much in order - I have watched Jones fighting regularly for the past 15-20 years, I have a strong attachment to him as a fighter and as a personality, and I really really don't want to see him get badly hurt. I can't really feel the same attachment to droves of faceless journeymen I've never heard of nor ever seen fight, can I?

    You're a strange one alright.

Even against Hopkins in the rematch I saw that he knew opportunities when to throw but he couldn't pull the trigger anymore. He's done and the only thing he still has is his name. It would have been an ass move not to give a rematch but he should have retired after beating Tarver. It was all downhill for him and still is afterwards.

    Agreed.

Lewis retired just in time, after beating Vitali - and only Vitali's ardent fans really hold it against him.

With all due respect to Tarver, he...doesn't quite have that same kind of fanbase as Vitali. :yep Nobody would have even cared. If Jones had indeed snubbed a rematch and bowed out with his dignity, history would be kind to him.

the fact that he just had info come out that he was suffering from brain issues makes even more of a reason to NOT sanction this

Lewis did retire on the top which is incredibly rare nowadays. Odd thing, I was just looking at Benitez/Moley and he went on too long aswell. He, like Jones, couldn't avoid the punches he would have in his prime because reflexes were such a big part of his style. Like Benitez, Jones is going on too long and will cause more damage towards his future health if he goes on. We as boxing fans don't want to see another Benitez or Mcclellan situation but it's sad that that still can/does happen.

I heard about that in another thread a few days ago. If this is true, Jones should call it a career and not risk getting more permanent damage towards his health.

maybe he wants to end up like mcclellan, he should have retired a long time ago, but I guess its better that he fights instead of forcing animals to :lol:

hard to compare rjj to briggs as a "great name". also why not throw in the audley-haye fight, which was a joke all around including a force's path to the title shot and his performance in the fight.
but the point that rjj shouldn't be in w/ lebedev is valid. the hell is jones thinking?
