Acosta did look good in those 1st four rounds, his right and uppercuts were banging up Bam-Bam. Acosta was even doing good fighting backed up in the corner as well ( in the early rounds).

Like he said, "I just could shake off the first punch that dropped me, from then on I was dizzy..."

Goes to show that annoying loudmouth Rios can bang.

Acosta messed himself up by fighting off the ropes and trading punches. That said, I think if he stuck to what he was doing in the beginning Rios prolly would have still ground him down.

I really wasn't impressed with him. His defense seemed lacking and his handspeed certainly wasn't at great as the commentators over at Showtime were making it out to be. Beyond looking like he had descent power, I didn't see much else.

Yep, though that isn't saying much as Billygoat vs Alexander was a shitty fight.

    I agree.
Acosta looked great and more than schooled Rios during the 1st 4 rounds.
And even as he faded, always was dangerous and trying to regain his advantage.
But Acosta ran out of gas.
Both trained and in fantastic shape.
An experienced, skilled Acosta was focused and didnt seem to panic.
When pushed to the limit, a fighter can feel and sense his opponent fading, even thou it may not be apparent for a ringside viewer.
This where a fighter can feed off his opponent, even when seriously receiving more than he was giving.
I believe this what helped Brandon Rios perservere and overcome Acosta
who was everything that a Champion should be.
Rios admitted that he felt the shots of Acosta and he was hurting.
It was his mental strength which got him the win.

Acosta demonstrated he has natural skills. He used angles, foot work and used subtle movements, not to mention through some nice punches. he was getting the better of rios in the beginning mid fight. PHilla, not sure what fight you were watching to say Rios had the upper hand every other round apart from round 4. for a moment there, it actually looked as if Rios was not going to make it out of rd 4.

Acosta could take those punches too, or he wouldnt of lasted as long as he did.
    Rios broke him mentally.
I think that Acosta couldnt understand what was keeping Rios up.
    It was the mindset.
A fighter should have the mental confidence and enjoy giving the beating.
And when a fighter keeps coming, he should be happy and look forward to providing a continued beating and not starting to worry about whats keeping his opponent up.

If Rios didn't have such a chin and power I doubt he would have overcome to win like he did. His power was the deciding factor. He caught Acosta one too many times and did what he was supposed to.. Stop him... But to say Acosta wasn't winning clearly in the beginning of the fight is a little concerning.....

    I think he's a bit wild myself.

I thought Acosta payed the price for 3 things, trying to load up on every counter, not holding when Rios trapped him on the ropes, and using too much movement, which eventually, with the body punching, damage he was accumulating from not holding when stuck on the ropes, and the fact he was trying to punch to hard, wore him down.

I dont think he moved too much, but that with all the other stuff he was doing, that he payed the price for doing that, and moving as much as he was.

Acosta can join Judah as having put on one of the all time greatest 4-round performances in a loss. :yep

Acosta was beating his ass, but he just got tired. Expended way more energy than he needed to considering Rios wasn't cutting off the ring well and he was coming straight forward with no jab so Acosta could see what was coming at him. But, Acosta chose to stay on his bicycle and he started getting tired midway through the fight and then he eventually started standing right in front of Rios and that's when Brandon was able to do his work. If Acosta was a bit smarter, he would've cruised to a UD. But, he expended too much energy and tired himself out. A rematch would be great.
