I see Wlad posing problems for Holmes, i see Larry finding answers. Later on in the fight when Larry starts asking questions of Wlad, i see Wlad getting hit, hurt and stopped.
Good point, honestly I see Vlad giving Holmes some problems. Height, reach and Vlad does have a good jab. But, with Holmes I feel like where talking about an all time great. He would find a way to adjust to Vlad, punish him with his sterling jab, and take it to him hard in the latter rds. From 4th rd on, its all Holmes UD.
Ther is a HUGE difference between getting dropped and stopped by Lamont Brewster and getting dropped by nuclear bombthrowing Earnie Shavers and climbing of the deck to win. When comparing getting of the deck, there is a vast difference between the two. I feel for Holmes in that he NEVER gets the respect he earned. Come on, Larry fought everyone , and in his prime dominated. Plus and here`s the difference, Larry dared to be great. NOT play it safe... If Larry Homes is not in everyone`s top 5 of all time great heavies ??? Can anyone seriously put Klit in even the top ten ???
LAMON (not Lamont) was a fit 225 pounder who hit very, very hard. Ask his sparring partners, ask his opponents. It's really about all he could do. There is not some incredible chasm between his power and Shavers. Sure, Holmes has the better chin, but does Holmes hit hard enough to exploit Wlad's deficiency? Holmes certainly does not hit as hard as Sanders or Brewster. In regards to Holmes ranking as an ATG having bearing on the outcome of this fight. I also rank Marciano over Waldo but would put a year's worth of paychecks on him being stopped by the giant Ukraine. Lastly, if Holmes were to fight a prime Wlad, I believe it would be his sternest test as champion and the best opponent as a title defense. Something to think about.
It's all because Wlad won't let Manny slap him on the chest for encouragement... He wouldn't be so boring if Manny was beating his chest between rounds, leaving huge red marks & shouting in his face: "Get that mother****er outta there!" :deal
Wladimir Klitschko wins either by decision or a late stoppage , Holmes' chin is overrated. But surprisingly , after I watched an image recently of Larry standing near Wladimir , I noticed the size difference is not very big , but still Wladimir is bigger and Holmes was not accustomed to fight bigger men , it took him so long to stop Cooney .. Wladimir is not on Cooney level and Holmes never had the power nor the technique nor the balls to try to stop Wladimir like the ones who actually did it. Wladimir is just a better fighter than Cooney and would have never lost to Michael Spinks , Cooney managed to lose by stoppage to Spinks , yet it took Holmes 13 rounds to stop him so how will he stop Wladimir ? He needed to thumb Shavers in order to win and he never beat Norton . And then he avoided every real threat during his reign.
Agreed, Wlad may not be the most exciting or most talented heavyweight the division has ever seen, but he's a class act, and showed tremendous mental resolve in rebounding from 3 very bad defeats that might have ended a lot of men's careers. He has kept himself in top physical shape from the day he turned pro, and even now at age 35, still looks better than most fighters in their 20's... I wouldn't pick him to beat Larry Holmes, but I wouldn't I bet money on the other outcome either. Win or lose, Wlad is a tough opponent to be taken seriously by any man who ever held the heavyweight title.
Holmes had trouble with good right hands, and vs. top level boxers in Witherspoon, and Norton. If its 15 rounds, I'll go with Holmes. 12 rounds could be very close.
