Fact is he ducked his standout challenger because, he said he," would not take a chance on losing his title to a black man, " what would you call that ,bravery?

The fact is that Jeffries had a harder early career than prety much any other heavyweight champion and whatever you can say against his resume no poster on this site is worthy to clean his spit bucket in boxing terms, much less criticise his bravery.

Jack Johnson ducked his standout challenger for a much longer period, but I would never question his courage.

 

There are many kinds of courage ,and also cowardice.Jeffries was physically courageous , morally I don't think so.

yes swarmer....a 170ish middleweight from 1 century ago would beat a 250ish HW with good chin and good power.
There's a reason why we have weigh classes...and a 5ft.7 middleweight could do nothing against a 6ft.4 250lbs HW.

Why he never fought Gunboat Smith?
Smith was for 2 years the top white HW and nr 1 contender with wins over the likes of langford Willard Morris and Moran; he also kayoed JJ in sparring.
If the public was so eager to see Johnson losing the title to a white man, why didn't the promoters make this fight happen?...after all Ed Gunboat was considered the white HW champion and made JJ look very bad in sparring
