Roy Jones schooled John Ruiz and became the heavyweight champion of the world. He should have retired that night, yet he is still active 8 years later planning to face hard hitting cruiserweight lebedevatsch. Boxers really need to learn when it is time to retire.
I wish he would have retired, at least after the first Tarver fight. He beat Tarver fair and square, but obviously wasn't at his best. I thought it was because of the weight loss, which it was, but the effects were permanent, as we know now. Anyway, a retirement after the Ruiz fight would have been great to me. But, let me correct you on one point. Jones won the WBA belt, which is the same as saying he didn't win jack! The World Heavyweight Champion was one, Lennox Claudius Lewis and Roy Jones didn't beat him, so he didn't become the Heavyweight Champion. But, what he did do was beat a top 5 heavyweight and that is damn impressive, if I may say so. I thought he would win, and he did it in imoressive fashion. I miss the "Superman" Roy Jones. Please Roy, from one Floridian to another, retire. P.S. Not that this matters, but I am friends with Roy's cousin Chris.
I think when we see all these over the hill former ATG's still fighting waay past their prime it has to do with MONEY! I doubt these guys are still doing it for the "love of the game" Many professional athletes get very rich, very fast at a very young age and start to live a lifestyle that is only sustainable if they continue to make the big money for years to come. A fighter like Jones may have grossed $50 mil in his reign but take away taxes, management, entourages, bad investments and a $1-3 million dollar a year life style and it doesnt take long to be broke! When that happens all they can do is come back to the only thing they know how to do to make a few more dollars while their name still means something.
You think jones is broke? he should make decent money while commentating on hbo plus what he has left.
I have no idea what Jone's financial situation is. I was stating more in a general sense of all these ATG's still risking their health and embarrassing themselves by continuing to fight long past when they should have. Also, I have seen first hand the ability of young athletes to blow through large sums of money that a regular person would never imagine possible. It doesn't matter if your making $20million a year if you're living like you're making $20 million a year. When the $20 milllion/yr stops rolling in you are right back at zero. Remember boxers dont retire at 65! An elite boxers career is at most 12 to 15 years. Find a retirement calculator online and figure out how much of your yearly income you would have to save up to be able to retire comfortably within your life style at age 40!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Jones hadn't yet achieved his greatest win at 175lbs at that point so I'd have actually rated him lower had he retired at that point. Beating Tarver was the best thing he ever did at 175lbs, the rest of it was pretty much forgettable.
